Job description
Location Toronto, 345 Carlingview Drive, Toronto, ON M9W6N9, CAN

Overview The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is a not‑for‑profit regulator dedicated to enhancing public safety across Ontario. TSSA's team of over 450 professionals delivers safety oversight across multiple regulated sectors through technical expertise, compliance, and collaboration with industry partners. At TSSA, safety is embedded in our culture and in all aspects of our work. Each role at TSSA has an impact on keeping Ontarians safe through engagement, evidence, enforcement, and education. We help build a safer community.

As part of the Engineering leadership team, you will impact and support public safety and regulatory confidence across Ontario by contributing to the consistent application of engineering standards and regulatory requirements. Through collaboration with internal partners, industry, and other regulators, you will help ensure engineering decisions are applied thoughtfully, accurately, and in service of a safer province.

Your Key Contributions

Program & Project Oversight:

Coordinate and monitor engineering projects and initiatives that enhance safety, service delivery, or regulatory processes (e.g., implementation of new or updated regulatory requirements); identify process gaps; recommend improvements; and support annual planning and budgeting activities.

Team Leadership:

Support the work of a team of engineers by providing clear expectations, balancing workloads, monitoring performance indicators, and offering coaching and guidance.

Technical Support & Escalation Management:

Provide subject‑matter expertise on complex technical matters, ensure consistent interpretation of codes and standards, and assist in resolving escalations requiring engineering judgment.

Regulatory Compliance & Policy Support:

Contribute to policy and procedure development, participate in national and provincial code committees, and assist in aligning practices with evolving regulatory frameworks.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration:

Work closely with inspection teams, policy, legal, finance, and communications to ensure regulatory requirements and operational priorities are understood and applied consistently.

Stakeholders Engagement:

Maintain effective relationships with clients, industry associations, advisory councils, and other regulators to support compliance, provide technical clarification, and address complex issues.

Harmonization & Continuous Improvement:

Collaborate with Engineering Managers across TSSA to identify opportunities for alignment, standardization, and ongoing improvement of engineering practices.

Health & Safety:

Promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and TSSA safety policies.

Travel:

Occasional travel within Ontario for meetings, site visits, and stakeholder engagement.

Your Qualifications & Key Strengths

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering with Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in good standing.

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in the fuels sector, including 3+ years of supervising or coordinating technical staff.

Experience supporting or providing technical input for approvals, inspections, field assessments, or compliance matters, and working collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders (e.g., industry associations, fuel suppliers, contractors, and regulatory partners).

Experience with project planning, workload coordination, and monitoring technical or operational performance indicators.

Knowledge & Skills:

Strong working knowledge of the CSA B149 series, other applicable fuel‑related codes, and regulatory frameworks, including the Technical Standards and Safety Act and the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Ability to exercise sound technical judgment, interpret codes consistently, and support resolution of escalated technical or compliance issues.

Helpful Information That Matters Hiring Range Details:

The hiring range for this role is $113,213 - $155,668. The annual salary may vary depending on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications.
