We are recruiting for a
Practice Support Lawyer - Business Law
to join our team in our
Toronto
office. The role would be national in scope and require 5‑8 years of Business Law experience, with an active bar membership in Ontario (a Québec bar membership is preferred, but not required). The incumbent in this role will be liaising with other Services Groups such as: (i) Client and Markets to develop client‑facing thought‑leadership pieces and contributing to client and alumni CPD content, and, (ii) in collaboration with the Professional Journey Office, working as a training resource supporting the knowledge and drafting skills development of Business Law associates through annotated instructional precedents and by providing drafting feedback on live client matters. McCarthy Tétrault employees benefit from a hybrid work environment. This is a newly created position.
Salary Range
(Toronto Only): $130,000 - $190,000 annually
The offered salary may vary based on the candidate’s job‑specific knowledge, skills, and experience.
As a Practice Support Lawyer (supporting the Business Law Group), you will be:
Drafting Precedents
Drafting model precedents and advice memos for review by senior lawyers, with detailed annotations to produce gold‑standard documents which can be used as best‑in‑class training materials for both students and associates
Conducting periodical reviews of existing precedents and update them as appropriate
Focusing on completing our existing list of precedents, as well as developing the core precedents already prioritized by M&A and Public Markets.
Ensuring all offices and regions are supported in the development of precedents, including M&A/corporate precedents in Quebec.
Ensuring all Precedents are integrated into existing and proposed Workflows produced by CSD to create an end‑to‑end product and experience for practicing lawyers
Knowledge Resources
Providing updates on rule changes/case law updates, plus recent developments and market trends
Responding to questions from lawyers for technical guidance and providing appropriate materials/resources
Assisting in the deployment of practice‑specific guides and responses to comments from regulatory bodies
Partnering with Practice Group and Industry Group Leaders to identify and draft thought leadership pieces, memos and other substantive legal updates for clients and alumni, including Practice Notes and White Papers
Attending Practice Group meetings to promote the use of precedents and other knowledge resources both at the national and local level
Soliciting feedback at these meetings to uncover gaps in our Precedent Library and our knowledge resources
Deal Terms
Monitoring current deal terms and What’s Market to provide timely updates to lawyers
Utilizing existing deal terms available from commercial and other sources including Practical Law and our proposed partnership with Neotica to incorporate into Precedents and other knowledge resources
AI and Knowledge Assets
Build out knowledge assets including Workflows and Precedents by using AI Tools and leveraging existing knowledge assets
Explore our AI‑powered tools that integrate with iManage to surface gold‑standard clauses and develop a Clause Bank for use when drafting or negotiating agreements
Leverage our AI Tools including Co‑Counsel, Co‑Pilot (and agents) and Walter to create precedents, workflows and playbooks whilst ensuring the optimum experience for users
Professional Journey Office (PJO)
Acting as an advisor in the design and delivery of all MT Academy Business Law curriculum for associates and students as part of our PJO experience including advising on the design and delivery of client‑facing and alumni‑facing Business Law curriculum
Partnering with PJO to determine the optimum delivery method for Business law modules including use of playbooks, case studies, AI‑supported simulations and video recordings
Supporting the testing and implementation of AI Tools focused on document drafting, extract and analysis as well as those focused on lawyer learning and development
Acting as a technical quality control resource for our Business Law associates and students, with a view to reviewing and discussing their draft provisions and overall approach, acting as a seasoned second set of eyes. The PSL will also act as a training resource to ensure the student or associate has considered all angles and developed the best work‑product before submission to the supervising lawyer for review
As our ideal candidate, you will distinguish yourself by the following profile:
LL.B. or J.D. required; active membership in the Law Society of Ontario is mandatory (Québec bar an asset).
5–8 years of Business Law experience at a large, full‑service law firm, ideally in Private M&A, Public M&A, and/or Capital Markets.
Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Excellent written (including drafting) and oral communication and presentation skills.
Bilingualism (English and French) preferred.
Experience in knowledge management and proficiency in developing and updating precedents.
Experience with working with legal technology and AI preferred.
Experience supporting training and professional development preferred.
