New Afton is situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, and is an underground gold and copper producing site. Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. Position Reports To:
Sr. Environmental Specialist
Position Overview This position will be an integral component of the environmental team in providing operational compliance support, technical knowledge, and environmental leadership for the New Afton Mine.
Key Responsibilities
Effectively track regulatory obligations, and engage with various operational representatives to maintain compliance;
Work in a team environment to manage environmental risk across the site, including management of the Environmental Risk Register;
Support maintenance, implementation, and audits of the Environmental Management System (ISO 14001 and Towards Sustainable Mining based), inclusive of EMS training and operational inspections;
Oversee environmental incident, hazard and KPI tracking and management, including leading investigations and reporting;
Support the development and presentation of compliance assessments to First Nations;
Manage departmental documents and ensure plans/procedures/etc. are updated as required;
Support the compilation of annual regulatory reports;
Support the transition and implementation of project regulatory approvals within operations teams;
Support in database management;
Other responsibilities as per the business requirement.
Qualifications
A degree in Environmental Sciences or relevant discipline with 3+ years of relevant experience.
Experience in engaging with Indigenous Nations and stakeholders.
Operational risk management experience.
Experience in mining in BC is considered an asset.
Familiarity with applicable BC laws and regulations, such as the Mines Act and Environmental Management Act, environmental management practices, and technical report writing.
Experience with ISO 14001:2015 and/or Towards Sustainable Mining standards.
Familiarity with programs such as SharePoint, INX InControl, InEight, TapRoot, or EQuIS is considered an asset.
Ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic work environment.
Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to compile effective presentations and relay complex technical information to various stakeholders.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s license.
Qualification Process Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
Compensation The anticipated salary for this position will be between $75,000 to $90,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
