The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges. The Marine Services division maintains and operates seven provincial ferries: Englishtown, Little Narrows, Country Harbor, LaHave River, Tancook Island, and Digby Neck. The ferry staff help further connect and expand Nova Scotia’s transportation network while ensuring safe and efficient operation of our provincial ferries. About Our Opportunity
As a Marine Engineer, you will join an engaged and collaborative team. Hours of work include 12‑hour shifts and may require alternating hours per week to maintain the ferry schedule. Primary Accountabilities
Operate the main engines of the ferry, ensuring all auxiliaries, pumps, ventilating fans, steering motors, and furnaces function safely and efficiently. Inspect, repair, and maintain the mechanical and electrical equipment on the ferry. Direct traffic on the ferry, arranging vehicles on the deck and ensuring the boat is clean at all times. Qualifications and Experience
Grade 12 education and at least 3 years of mechanical experience. Valid Seafarer’s Certificate of Medical Examination, Marine Emergency Duty Certificate, and Marine First Aid. Small Vessel Machinery Operator’s License (SVMO) is an asset. Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills, ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and exercise independent judgment and initiative. Benefits

The role requires lifting up to 50 pounds and standing, shoveling, walking, climbing, and sitting for extended periods. Exposure to diesel fumes, noise, and dust may occur. Work may be in varying weather conditions, nights, weekends, and shift-based. Pay Grade
