Mission / Role Summary The general mission is to address all design aspects of a mission‑critical IT solution within a larger communication system that supports the operation of the Communication‑Based Train Control (CBTC) system. This includes analysis of Customer (internal or external) specifications to define IT architecture, features and solutions, development of system and subsystem requirements, creation of a detailed IT design, development and hands‑on implementation of the solution, as well as participation in all deployment, verification and validation activities and support.
Key Accountabilities
Convert Customer requirements into conceptual designs and prepare associated documentation by performing operational analyses, simulations and technical trade‑off studies evaluating alternative design configurations and functional features.
Create new concepts or modify existing ones to fulfill customer requirements.
Develop and document detailed IT designs implementing the requirements.
Deploy solutions in the lab and in the field, supporting testing and commissioning activities.
Participate in technical reviews of component designs, installation designs, vendor selection and qualification, and related areas.
Present technical designs and reports to customers and/or other engineering/management groups in clear, complete, concise, and non‑ambiguous terms.
Interface and build strong relationships with Software, Hardware and IVVQ groups to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in‑house and field test issues.
Key Requirements
University degree in computer sciences, information technology, engineering or a closely related field.
Industry IT certifications (Microsoft, VMWare, CompTIA).
Knowledge of Microsoft client and server operating system configuration and administration.
Knowledge of configuration and troubleshooting of Microsoft Active Directory environments.
Knowledge of Linux operating system administration and configuration.
Knowledge of VMWare software‑defined data centre configuration and administration.
Knowledge of IT relevant support systems (telemetry collection and system monitoring solutions).
Knowledge of administration and configuration of software runtime infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes).
Knowledge of IT automation solutions (Bash shell/PowerShell scripting, Ansible).
Preferred Qualifications
Rail signalling, CBTC, and knowledge of specification‑driven network (as it applies to computer systems with both hardware & software operation) are assets.
Knowledge of network principles and technologies:
Ethernet/IP‑based networking (switching/routing protocols).
Redundancy and high‑availability technologies; network/IT services.
MPLS and VPN technologies.
RF networking (802.11, LTE, 4G, 5G, FluidMesh).
Cyber‑security principles, technologies and solutions.
Knowledge/experience in the following fields is desired:
Railway‑specific designs and standards (IEC‑61375, EN‑50159).
Software‑Defined Network (SDN) solutions (VMWare NSX, Cisco); SD‑WAN solutions.
Compensation Total Compensation Range (Base Salary + Annual Incentive plan): $76,465 – $98,188.
