Job descriptionJoin the Urban Growth and Open Space team to help shape the future of Edmonton’s land use and environmental landscape. This temporary full-time role offers a professional opportunity to impact how our city grows and how our natural spaces are preserved.
As a Planner, you will perform professional-level work in land use, active transportation, environmental, and open space planning. You will lead a variety of projects, generating recommendations and developing policies that align with provincial legislation and municipal regulations.
What will you do?
Research, develop, and guide the implementation of city-wide policies for land use and open space
Review and participate in the development of new neighbourhood plans and statutory plan amendments
Evaluate rezoning, subdivision, and land development applications throughout the city and the North Saskatchewan River Valley
Collaborate with internal and external community partners to promote best practices in environmental planning
Respond to complex inquiries from City Council, media, and the general public
Conduct research and provide accurate, customized information for various audiences
Contribute to city-wide strategic level policies and interdisciplinary studies
Support engagement plans and methods for interested and/or affected parties
Implement "Breathe: Edmonton’s Green Network Strategy" by prioritizing projects across departments
Provide subject matter expertise to ensure the success of branch and department initiatives
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Environmental Studies, or a related field
Minimum of 2 years of progressively relevant experience in planning, policy development, public engagement, and project management
Assets
Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, or Environmental Studies
Skills required for success
Application of land use, active transportation, and environmental policy planning principles
Proficiency in municipal service delivery for parks, recreation, and open space planning
Execution of detailed research and analysis on short notice
Effective communication of complex information through professional-level writing and verbal presentations
Management of large workloads and prioritization of tasks within short timeframes
Negotiation and collaboration with diverse groups to achieve corporate priorities
Application of statistical techniques and qualitative/quantitative research methodologies
Utilization of computer systems for mapping, design applications, and data management
Building of professional networks and effective working relationships across City Departments

Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
This role works primarily in an indoor setting
Availability to attend events during the evenings and weekends may be required from time to time
This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states
