Job descriptionSummary / Job Scope Responsible for actively promoting and maintaining a safe working environment by conducting workplace inspections, investigating safety incidents, developing and implementing safety training programs, ensuring compliance with internal and external safety regulations, and advising management on risk mitigation strategies to prevent injuries and promote employee health and wellbeing. The position may also conduct or facilitate safety audits and safety committees, and train employees on proper safety procedures and equipment usage. It requires frequent travel to different terminal locations in Canada and the U.S.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Inspections and Audits Conduct regular inspections of work areas, observe behaviours to identify potential hazards, non‑compliance issues, and unsafe practices. Perform safety audits to assess overall safety performance and compliance with internal standards and external safety regulations. Manage and support the health and safety management system.
Incident Investigation Investigate all workplace incidents, including near misses, to determine root causes, identify corrective actions, and implement preventive measures to avoid future occurrences.
Safety Training and Education Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees at all levels, covering hazard recognition, new‑hire orientation, PPE use, emergency procedures and safe work practices. Facilitate additional training such as lock‑out/tag‑out, operator training, confined space, arc flash, working at heights, CPR/First Aid/AED, etc.
Policy Development and Implementation Assist in developing, updating, implementing and enforcing company safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant occupational safety and health regulations.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation Conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards and develop appropriate mitigation strategies to minimise risks in the workplace.
Incident Reporting and Analysis Maintain accurate records of all safety incidents, hazard IDs and corporate leading indicators; analyse data to identify trends and implement preventative actions and continuous improvement.
Communication and Awareness Promote a safety culture by effectively communicating safety information to employees, contractors and visitors through meetings, posters and other channels.
Compliance Management Monitor compliance with OSHA, OHSA, CNESST, Department of Labour, WorkSafeNB, industry standards such as CSA and ANSI and corporate internal standards.
Collaboration with Management and Stakeholders Work closely with management and other stakeholders to address safety concerns, provide recommendations for improvements, and ensure safety is a top value.
Safety Culture Leadership Lead and foster a positive safety culture where everyone in the organisation is committed to safety and works together to improve it.
Knowledge of Safety Regulations Thorough understanding of OSHA, OHSA, CNESST, Department of Labour, WorkSafeNB, industry standards such as CSA and ANSI and other relevant company safety standards.
Analytical Skills Ability to identify safety issues, analyse root causes and develop effective action plans.
Process Management Create processes necessary to achieve organisational goals, organise people and activities effectively, utilise internal metrics and seek opportunities for synergy and integration.
Problem Solving Apply analysis and synthesis skills; gather and analyse available information from industry best practices and regulatory bodies to determine compliance and incorporate investigation of issues.
Planning & Organization Prioritise and plan work activities, use time efficiently, plan for additional resources, integrate changes smoothly, set goals and objectives and work in an organised manner.
Communication Skills Clear, concise and professional communication to educate employees, management and stakeholders on safety matters, including communication with governmental agencies.
Training and Presentation Skills Ability to deliver various presentations and safety training to front‑line employees and management.
Attention to Detail Identify potential hazards during inspections and observations.
Coaching Ability Coach employees and influence positive safety behaviour to promote a safety‑first culture.
Technical Proficiency Use Microsoft Office and safety software such as eCompliance, Avetta; familiarity with data visualisation software such as Power BI and strong Excel skills.
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree (BSc or BEng) from a four‑year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience, preferably in the building construction materials industry.
Equivalent experience can include a combination of an accredited non‑university/technical school level safety program and direct safety supervision in an industrial environment.
Professional safety certifications such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or OHSA 30 considered an asset.
Bilingual English/French a plus.
Other Requirements
Travel Requirement Frequent travel up to 50 % of the time is required. Ability to travel to different terminal locations with reliable transportation and a clean driving licence. Occasional travel to the United States may be required; possession of valid documents to travel to the U.S. is required.
Physical Demands Moderate physical activity such as prolonged walking, sitting, standing, walking up and down ladders and sustained keyboarding up to 50 % of the workday. Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds. Exposure to elements, dust, dirt, odours, noise and other operational by‑products may occur.
