Job description
Conservation Programs Officer

The Conservation Programs Officer (CPO) is the central resource supporting the successful delivery of Cree Nation Government’s conservation-related initiatives. Responsibilities include developing conservation proposals and plans, assisting with Environmental and Social Assessment processes, managing development and implementation, and acting as the liaison with Cree community representatives and entities. The CPO is also responsible for delivering reports and ad‑hoc data requests.

Functional Responsibilities

Assist the Manager of Protected Areas (MPA) with identifying priorities for terrestrial and marine conservation projects.

Support the Marine Conservation Coordinator with implementation of marine and coastal conservation projects.

Coordinate and complete projects on time and within budget and scope.

Develop and maintain good relations with Cree communities, key stakeholders, and external consultants.

Provide technical support for consultation projects and review studies and documents required for local projects.

Promote effective communication with Cree communities and organizations.

Assist in the development of conservation plans and ESIA, and manage the protected area network through collaboration with consultants and experts.

Coordinate conservation projects with the Cree local administration when required.

Set deadlines and monitor and summarize project progress.

Engage in or manage research initiatives to improve cultural, environmental, and wildlife information.

Interaction/Communication Responsibilities

Provide advice, guidance, and support to communities on local conservation responsibilities.

Respond to requests for technical support, review studies, and prepare reference documents for local projects.

Financial And Reporting Responsibilities

Collaborate with the MPA on all transactions, expenses, invoices, and payments for material and equipment.

Prepare status reports, monitor expenditures, and ensure projects stay within budget and timeline.

Other Responsibilities

Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge and skills in areas of responsibility.

Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications Education

College diploma in Administration and/or Geography, Planning and Environment.

Experience

Three to five years of relevant experience.

Experience in conservation or protected areas with emphasis on complex, inter‑departmental funding administration, data management, financial data management, and analysis.

Language

Fluency in verbal Cree.

Fluency in English.

Fluency in French is an asset.

Knowledge And Abilities

Proven organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple projects.

Attention to detail and accuracy.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

Working knowledge of accounting.

Strong judgment in complex situations.

Problem‑solving, strategic thinking, and initiative.

Ability to work under significant pressure and adapt to changing environments.

Additional Requirements

Typical office setting with no unusual physical demands.

Willingness to travel occasionally.

Must agree to undergo a background check.

The Cree Nation Government may waive any or all of the above requirements if a suitable candidate who is a JBNQA beneficiary accepts a training plan determined by the Government as a condition of employment.
