postdoctoral fellow in experimental particle physics

to work on the Hyper-Kamiokande neutrino experiment and the Intermediate Water Cherenkov Detector (IWCD),

for a 2-year term

position.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be primarily based at the University of Winnipeg, with extended research stays at TRIUMF (on the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver) with significant travel to Japan for detector deployment, initial water fill and drone imaging campaigns, and commissioning and early data-taking. They will work closely with an international collaboration across North America, Japan, and Europe.

Project Overview and Scientific Scope: The Winnipeg group plays a leading role in the design, deployment, and analysis of photogrammetry systems for both Hyper-K and IWCD. These systems are essential for precision detector geometry, alignment, and calibration, directly impacting reconstruction performance and systematic uncertainties in early physics measurements.

This position offers a unique opportunity to own a critical detector calibration system and connect it directly to first physics results in a next-generation neutrino experiment.

In addition to fixed photogrammetry systems, drone-based imaging campaigns will be conducted immediately following the initial detector water fill. These datasets will play a central role in early detector characterization.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will lead the photogrammetry and geometry program within the Winnipeg Hyper-K effort, including:

Leading photogrammetry analysis and reconstruction, including 3D reconstruction of detector geometry from fixed and drone-based imaging.

Validation and uncertainty quantification of detector geometry.

Owning the interface between geometry and physics, including propagation of geometry uncertainties into reconstruction and simulation.

Contributions to detector calibration frameworks.

Playing a central role in detector commissioning and early operations.

Leading or co‑leading a first physics analysis, particularly in areas sensitive to detector geometry and systematics (e.g., event reconstruction performance, detector response modeling).

Participating in on‑site deployment and data‑taking campaigns in Japan.

Qualifications:

PhD in experimental particle physics or a closely related field.

Strong experience in at least one of:

Detector calibration or reconstruction.

Photogrammetry / computer vision / 3D reconstruction.

Scientific data analysis (C++/Python/ROOT).

Interest in connecting detector performance to physics measurements.

Ability to take initiative and leadership within a collaborative environment.

Instrumentation.

Reconstruction and calibration.

Physics analysis.

The position is subject to budgetary approval.

The salary will be $50,000–$60,000 CAD per year (with additional travel support). This position is eligible for extended health benefits, including pension.
