Job description
Founded in 2002, the

Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO)

is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

The

NWMO

has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders who are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, the

NWMO

selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace as the potential hosts for the site for a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.

This decision means our office and staff will, in the future, be relocating to Ignace, Ont., and the deep geological repository will be situated in the area of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace. Infrastructure planning and development are underway to support this transition and ensure that both the community and our employees are well served and supported, now and in the future.

Data/GIS Analyst

One (1) Position Available – Temporary – 12 months

Position Location:

Toronto Head Office – 22 St. Clair Avenue East

or Ignace, Ontario – 304 Main Street

Job Summary:

We are currently seeking a Data/GIS Analyst to join our Site Characterization group.

Reporting to the Section Manager, Site Characterization Data Management, the Data Analyst will contribute to the configuration, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of data workflows and tools used to manage site characterization and environmental monitoring data.

Key duties include: reviewing, evaluating and quality assuring site characterization data to ensure compliance with NWMO’s quality assurance protocols; supporting data ingestion, transformation, and integration processes; creating and reviewing metadata; and providing user support for data management tools. The Data Analyst will also support analysis and reporting on site characterization and environmental data to assist the scientific and operational teams.

Responsibilities

Support the ingestion, processing, and management of site characterization and environmental monitoring data within NWMO Site Characterization data systems.

Provide user support, guidance, and training for data management tools and workflows, including preparation of user documentation and delivery of instructional support to facilitate effective system use.

Collaborate with subject matter experts to support analysis and interpretation of site characterization and environmental monitoring data.

Review, evaluate, and quality assure site characterization and environmental data from internal teams and external contractors to ensure compliance with NWMO’s Quality Assurance protocols.

Interface with NWMO IT and external vendors to support system functionality and data integration activities.

Assist in the configuration and maintenance of data management platforms (including setup of data structures, workflows, and user interfaces).

Maintain metadata and documentation related to datasets and workflows.

Support ongoing improvement of data workflows, tools, and system usability

Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

A 4-year Bachelor’s degree majoring in Science, Computer Information Systems (CIS), Management Information Systems (MIS) or equivalent.

Professional experience working with site characterization or environmental monitoring datasets.

A period of over 2 years and up to and including 4 years experience working with structured data systems and/or relational databases in a highly procedurally regulated environment.

Experience supporting data processing, transformation, or integration workflows; including familiarity with data quality assurance and validation processes.

Demonstrated ability to multitask in a high-pace environment.

Must be proactive and able to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

Knowledge of natural sciences and the management of analytical and field collected data.

Excellent organization skills and strong attention to detail.

Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.

It is an asset to have experience with:

Kisters Wiski water resource management tool or similar environmental data management systems

Configuration or support of data management platforms

Data import, transformation, or ETL-type processes

SQL or working with relational databases

Scripting or data processing tools (e.g. Python, PowerShell, or similar)

Experience working with environmental monitoring data (e.g. water quality, hydrometric, or climate data)

Other Information Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.

NWMO currently operates in a

hybrid work model of 3 days in the office

(Tuesdays being universal) and 2 days working from home.

Candidates residing in the Greater Toronto Area: Office Location – 22 St. Clair Avenue East until their role is required to relocate.

Current employees may continue working from their existing work location/arrangements until their role is required at site.
