Overview:
The Practicum Advisor (PA) positionislargely focusedon connecting the learning in EDBE 8P01, the foundational courses associated with year 1, to the field of practice by supporting the development of teacher candidates as culturally responsive and competent practitioners.Practicum Advisors (PA) willuse the log of professional practice in alignment with materials covered in 8P01 toengage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy. PAs are expected to be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students, attend to unconscious biases (both self and teacher candidate), and encourage inclusivity.
You will alsowork with associate teachers (ATs), and respond to ATs correspondencein a timely manner,
Duties:
The duties and nominal hours for an Education Instructor – Practicum Advisor are established by the nominal workload includes scheduled contact time with students as well as non-contact may include collaboration with associate teachers and principals, meeting students in-person or on-line, marking / grading, attending program meetings and completing mandatory training as required.
Become familiar with Brock University policies and adhere to them.
Complete required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class.
Complete required Gender and Sexual Violencesupportsfor teacher candidates training.
Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications with teacher candidates and program personnel;
Collaborate and co-plan with co-advisor.
Effectively deliver all aspects of thecourse,including using online platforms, and virtual meetings forcommunication..
Manage instructional contact time and non-contact time.accordingto the requirements outlined in the practicum advisor requirements and Log of Teaching to the nature of this course, flexible work hours are instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs,including liaising with Student Accessibility Services asrequiredfor specificstudents..
Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to course concepts/content and Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT;
Work collegially and collaboratively with other team instructors, course team lead(s) including attending team meetings and debriefings.
Mentor teacher candidates for practicum placements (P/J/I/) with reference to the Teacher EducationPracticumHandbook.
Coach/mentor teacher candidates and work with associateteachers.
Respond to associate teacher’s correspondencein a timelymanner.
Participate, aswarranted, in theProgram’s referral procedures as outlined in the Teacher EducationPracticumHandbook.
Communicate on email to support teacher candidates
Evaluate teacher candidates during thepracticum.
Submit final grades by deadlines.
Qualifications:
Aminimum of 5 yearsof recent(last five years)teaching/schoolexperience;specificallyin the area ofmentoring new teachers and/or teacher candidates.
Amaster's degreeor research related experience
Amaster'sdegree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization;
Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers
Mustbe in good standingwith the OCTat the time of appointment;
Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education;
Exhibits contemporary knowledge ofeducational theory and pedagogyincluding assessment;
Knowledge about social justice and equity through anti-racistand anti-oppressivelenses;
Experiencefacilitatingchallenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners.
Experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners;
Competency in usingeducationaltechnologyand platformsforcontent creation,coursemanagementand delivery.
