What you’ll do The 24x7 Real-Time Operations Control Room function has evolved into two distinct streams: 1. Generation and Transmission (Grid), and 2. Distribution. This role supports the Generation and Transmission (Grid) stream.
Reporting to the Manager, Real-Time Operations, T&D System Operations, the Senior Manager provides strong people leadership, operational expertise, and technical insight to support the safe, reliable, and efficient 24/7 operation of BC Hydro’s electricity grid. The role leads a team of operations professionals responsible for real-time grid operations in a fast[1]paced, high-consequence environment.
The successful candidate demonstrates sound judgment and the ability to make timely, effective decisions, while prioritizing and delegating in a dynamic operational setting. A key focus of the role is building and sustaining a highly engaged, capable workforce to deliver on the Real-Time Operations mandate.
Some of the key duties include, but are not limited to:
Lead the safe, reliable, and efficient 24/7 operation of BC Hydro’s integrated electric system (generation, transmission, and interconnections).
This is a resident position based at FVO, working Monday to Friday 37.5 hours/week.
Foster a safety-first, inclusive, and respectful work environment across managers and IBEW staff.
Provide leadership, coaching, and development to front-line managers to strengthen performance in Safety, Reliability, and Operational Excellence.
Develop and implement strategies, plans, and processes to achieve operational and business objectives.
Monitor and improve operational performance through metrics, workforce optimization, and continuous improvement of tools and processes.
Oversee operating orders and support effective shift operations, scheduling, and workforce planning.
Contribute to RTO leadership team priorities, including strategic planning, decision-making, and operational direction.
Support MRS compliance and related processes within Real-Time Operations.
Lead workforce planning activities, including hiring, performance management, succession planning, and employee development.
Represent RTO internally and externally, as required.
Provide advice to the Manager, RTO on safety, operations, training, and business priorities.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
What you bring
The ideal candidate will posses a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
10+ years of experience preferably within an electric utility environment; with a minimum 3 years’ experience as a people leader in an Operations environment.
Applicants who do not meet the full qualifications but have experience in the operations, maintenance or management of Utility power systems will be considered for a lower-level position.
Experience leading and supervising technical teams, preferably within a unionized environment.
Knowledge of integrated electrical systems, including transmission, sub-transmission, and/or distribution operations is an asset.
Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, with the ability to lead in high-pressure, time-sensitive operational environments.
Proven leadership capabilities with strengths in communication, change management, coaching, and team engagement.
Ability to quickly assess complex issues and determine effective courses of action.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Demonstrated commitment to safety and a safety-first culture.
