We are seeking a
Director, Indigenous & Community Relations
to join our management team to lead the development and implementation of the Company’s Indigenous and Community engagement strategy.
The Role We are looking for a professional who can lead FPX’s Indigenous and Community engagement initiatives. The successful candidate will be a demonstrated leader and have a history of success leading similar programs and teams and will be responsible for driving innovation in implementing and managing best-in-class engagement strategies and programs.
Reporting to the Vice President, Sustainability & External Affairs, this full-time and permanent position will be responsible for the development and execution of a robust strategy for deepening the Company’s relationships with First Nations and other local communities involved in our mineral exploration and development projects. A commitment to respectful collaboration and long-term relationships is essential for success in this role.
The director will set Indigenous and Community engagement program targets and budgets, define goals and standards for the Company’s Indigenous and Community engagement efforts, and provide direction to staff and consultants in the execution of program activities to achieve Baptise project objectives and milestones and support the strategic goals of the Company.
Duties of the role Strategy & Performance Management
Strategic Planning:
Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive Indigenous engagement and community relations strategies.
KPI Development:
Establish clear objectives and metrics for measuring Indigenous and community engagement performance.
Fort St. James Office
– Management and mentoring of staff in our Fort St. James office
Budgeting & Reporting:
Establish and manage budgets for Indigenous and Community engagement programs, providing regular performance updates to senior management.
Relationship Management:
Build and maintain respectful, long-term partnerships with local Indigenous nations, nearby communities, and local and regional government authorities.
Program Implementation:
Execute communication and engagement programs that deliver sustainable social, educational, and economic benefits to local partners.
Stakeholder Liaison:
Act as the primary point of contact for Indigenous leadership, with regular travel to partner communities to ensure collaborative project involvement.
Technical Integration:
Liaise with the Projects Team to ensure Indigenous and community knowledge, perspectives and considerations are integrated into project-related activities including prioritizing Indigenous and local procurement.
Permitting Support:
Drive Indigenous and community relations efforts that directly support permitting and environmental assessment objectives for the Company’s projects.
Communications:
Lead the execution of locally-focused external communication strategies to establish and maintain transparency and trust.
Leadership & Culture
Team Mentorship:
Manage and mentor staff, consultants, and contractors to foster a company-wide culture centered on responsible and respectful project development.
Cross-Functional Advocacy:
Serve as the internal champion for Indigenous and community-related matters, ensuring that the Company executes on its commitment to collaborative project development.
Candidate Profile
University degree in engineering, environmental science, or political/social science preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in environmental monitoring, permitting and regulatory compliance in mining or other extractive industries in Canada (preferably British Columbia), with experience in managing First Nations and community relations.
Demonstrated experience in planning, developing programs, delivering projects and managing resources effectively.
Ability to build and maintain relationships, engage, lead change and partner effectively with other team members and diverse external partners.
Possesses superior communication skills with the ability to write and speak about complex topics to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
Superior interpersonal and relationship-building abilities with the capacity to work independently and in a team environment with people at all levels, both internally and externally.
Experience implementing community and Indigenous aspects of industry standards i.e., Towards Sustainable Mining and Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management is an asset.
Ability to develop schedules and budgets and to deliver work programs within guidance.
Focus on establishing and maintaining a strong commitment to workplace safety and ethics.
Willingness to spend meaningful time in the field and to meet with regulatory, community and Indigenous partners.
Cultural sensitivity to deal appropriately with employees and external resources, local community, and governments.
