Starting Salary Range: 120,000-145,000. Exact compensation may vary depending on the individual experience and qualifications of each candidate. Applicants with greater or less than the minimum qualifications for this posted opportunity may be considered for alternate opportunities.

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact Kinectrics has a growing portfolio of services supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear power plants and lead the life extension projects of existing nuclear power plants in Canada and around the world. As part of our growing design team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the design of mechanical systems and/or components both in the traditional nuclear market, and in new initiatives to develop nuclear technology. The successful candidate will be working within a multi-discipline engineering team mainly supporting the Advanced Technologies and Modular Engineering team located in Toronto ON. The role is within the Design and Engineering Services department of Kinectrics. This role is focused on leading projects for various clients including non-Canadian sites. The role will be engaged in either new design and development of systems and equipment and will also be supporting the refurbishment projects and/or new build projects in Canada and around the world.

Provide input and direction to the development of conceptual/detailed systems and equipment designs as they progress through a structured design cycle

Perform Mechanical engineering analysis and/or reactor core design and analysis

Interface with construction/procurement partners and utility stakeholders, throughout the lifecycle of the design project (i.e., from preliminary and conceptual engineering to detailed design, implementation and close-out) to provide practical and effective solutions as per requirements.

Provide field support to multi-disciplined plant design modifications, including provision of field engineering

Understand and assess client problems and determine appropriate means of solution.

Develop client’s concepts of new or alternative nuclear related systems and reactor ideas to further advance projects to the next stage

Conduct technical assessments and emergent troubleshooting/engineering to support refurbishment projects and operating unit (capital) projects.

Understand and conduct analysis regarding material and fuel handling activities and equipment within nuclear sites

Interface effectively with other staff on multi-disciplinary projects.

Stay current with developments within their field of expertise.

Provide technical oversight and mentoring of more junior members of the Engineering team

Occasional travel may be required

Other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed

10+ years of relevant experience, including at least 8 years in nuclear energy industry.

Mechanical and/or nuclear engineering activities including:

Design Requirements

Design Specifications

Flow diagrams and P&IDs

Piping and HVAC Isometric drawings

Hydraulic calculationsStress Analysis

Preparation of equipment and components sizing calculations, technical and design specifications, and design drawings of Class 1, 2, 3 and 6 items. This may include the following:

Pumps

Motors

Actuators

Valves

Heat Exchangers

Filters

Design of modular engineered systems including skid-type systems and components

Vendor-interface and preparation of equipment & component specifications to facilitate procurement including selection of nuclear (Class 1/2/3) and conventional (Class 6) valves, flanges, fittings, pumps and heat exchangers.

Design assistance with technical evaluations, independent third-party reviews, design walkdowns, system hydraulic calculations, component sizing calculations and HVAC flow balance calculations.

Design and maintenance of material handling devices such as cranes and hoists is an asset

Structural constructability of designs including welded and bolted joints are a must

Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards including but not limited to CSA N285, CSA ASME BPV Section III and Section VIII, B31.1, B31.3, ASME Section III Appendix XXIII qualification is considered an asset.

Working knowledge of Nuclear Quality Assurance Standards such as CSA N299 and CSA N286.

Knowledge and experience working with nuclear power plant (e.g. OPG or Bruce Power) systems & processes, including

A Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering (or equivalent) is required.

Candidates are expected to have the PEO P.Eng. designation.

Experience with nuclear safety & licensing experience would be considered an asset

Good time management skills and demonstrated capability to interface effectively with and gain the trust of stakeholders and clients.

Assist in development of proposals and negotiation of contracts with clients

Knowledge of project management methodologies and processes is a must

Currently approved Nuclear Security Clearance (e.g. Bruce Power and/or OPG) is an asset

This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
