About the Role:

Reporting to the Manager, Health and Clinical Operations, the Psychotherapist provides assessment, therapy and psychotherapy to students to assist with their social/emotional growth and development, to support the student’s academic success and overall well-being, supporting a wide range of issues including an impaired ability to function effectively academically, combined with emotional distress or conflict.

The Psychotherapist will:

  • Meet with students to identify and assess student needs and risks; using both clinical skills and standardized measures;
  • Determine level of need and provide direction/referral to professional in stepped care model;
  • Identify, assess, develop, and implement effective treatment plans;
  • Provide psychotherapy including cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, trauma informed, cross-cultural counselling, Positive Psychology interventions, as well as other treatment modalities;
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments for students referred to Personal Counselling, using standardized tools and clinical expertise;
  • Determine appropriate level of care required using the stepped care model; provide direction and resources to students;
  • Respond and incorporate student preferences for treatment, including cultural and identity affirming supports;
  • Collaborate and liaise with internal campus partners, and community partners to facilitate external referrals of care when appropriate;
  • Develop and implement an evaluation model, including appropriate methods and metrics to assess service effectiveness;
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential clinical documentation in accordance with professional, legal, and institutional standards;
  • Oversee Masters of Social Work and Registered Psychotherapist interns, supporting their professional development, ethical practice, and clinical competency;
  • Liaise with faculty, staff, and student groups on campus to promote services and ensure a high level of awareness of services provided;
  • Ensure collaboration and co-ordination of services, so that services to students are highly effective.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Masters degree in Psychotherapy, Social Work or Master of Counselling Psychology or related mental health discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) or another Ontario regulatory college authorized to practise psychotherapy;
  • This position is required to provide services at all Brock campuses; therefore the incumbent requires access to a reliable means of transportation;
  • A Niagara Regional Police background check (including a Vulnerable Sector Screening);
  • Post-registration clinical experience and experience engaging in evaluation or program outcomes;
  • Advanced psychotherapy skills grounded in a strong and well-integrated theoretical foundation;
  • Proven experience delivering effective individual psychotherapy;
  • Demonstrated range, depth, and adaptability in responding to diverse and complex student counselling needs;
  • Comprehensive understanding of ethical standards, privacy legislation, and clinical risk management;
  • Applied expertise in implementing recommendations from psychological assessments and medical reports;
  • Ability to provide holistic care that supports students’ life skills, learning skills, and overall wellbeing;
  • Experience and confidence using suicide risk assessment tools and implementing appropriate interventions;
  • Training and/or experience delivering evidence‑based therapies, including CBT, DBT, Solution‑Focused Therapy, ACT, and IFS;
  • Extensive experience collaborating within multidisciplinary teams and with community partners;
  • Strong working knowledge of legislation relevant to the mental health field;
  • Experience and confidence using suicide risk assessment tools and implementing appropriate interventions;
  • Proficient use of mental health terminology, including diagnostic classifications;
  • Strong computer literacy, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, web applications, Outlook, PowerPoint, Workday, and scheduling/appointment systems;
  • Thorough knowledge of records management, privacy requirements (FIPPA, PHIPA), and best practices;
  • Promotes and embodies inclusivity and respect within the workplace and the broader community;
  • Excellent crisis intervention and clinical assessment abilities;
  • Highly developed verbal, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills;
  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills and takes initiative to improve services and processes; and
  • Flexible, adaptable, and responsive to changing priorities and environments.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Experience working with young adults in a post-secondary setting;
  • Ability to administer and interpret academic and mental health testing measures to assess for academic strengths and weaknesses and mental health functioning;
  • Demonstrated success in building rapport and trust with racialized populations seeking mental health services;
  • Can administer level A B and C assessments;
  • Experience supervising Masters level counselling/psychotherapy students. Has met the stated criteria from CRPO to be a clinical supervisor.

Salary and Total Rewards:

  • Job Grade L, Salary Scale ($66,817-108,353);
  • Target Hiring Range: $66,817-$85,000*
  • This is a fixed term contract that includes:

  • Pension Plan: Enrollment eligibility in the Brock University Pension Plan.
  • Vacation: Up to 3 weeks per year, in addition to university holidays.
