Job description
Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for a part-time, permanent position of Security and Community Liaison Officer positionat Keshen Goodman Public Library.

This a unionized and employment equity position, designated for Indigenous Peoples, African Nova Scotians and other visible minorities. Preference will be given to internal applicants from the NSUPE Local 14 bargaining unit.

ABOUT THE BRANCH
Keshen Goodman Public Library is a bustling center of activity serving a culturally diverse community in the Clayton Park area. The branch boasts a cozy cafe, welcoming outdoor spaces, a dedicated area for kids and a variety of technology resources. You'll find people connecting with friends, online or in person in languages from all across the globe. The high energy of Keshen Goodman library always makes for a lively experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Security and Community Liaison Officer at Halifax Public Libraries you will:
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming environment by proactively engaging with customers and staff using a calm, empathy-driven approach. This position ensures library policies and safety regulations are followed.
  • Proactively engage and build trust with customers and staff, supporting them in their enjoyment of the library and in their work.
  • Monitor inside and outside the building; open and secure the building at closing; monitor surveillance system; and handle bank deposits.
  • Identify and address any security and safety concerns, including responding to emergency calls, explaining library policy to customers, and verbally de-escalating volatile situations.
  • Prepare succinct, factual Incident Reports as required.
  • In accordance with library policies, ask disruptive customers to leave the premises and under the direction of a manager, bar customers and serve them with a Protection of Property Act Notice.
  • Liaise with staff from other community agencies and services, such as Halifax Regional Police and Navigator Street Outreach.
  • Perform minor maintenance and janitorial duties.
  • Assist with special events, including providing access, greeting and directing customers, managing crowds, and monitoring alcohol consumption.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY DEMANDS
  • Constant moving 50-80% of the time
  • Lifting and moving of medium to heavy weight objects
  • Dealing with customers who present behavioural challenges

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
Education and Experience:

One year post-secondary diploma (e.g. Law & Security) plus two years related experience working directly with the public

OR

Grade 12 plus three years related experience working directly with the public.

Requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security techniques and practices
  • Experience in non-violent conflict resolution and knowledge of self-defence
  • First-aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain
  • Knowledge of Internet, Windows and office software applications
  • Willingness to obtain other Library funded licencing and training required by provincial legislation
Assets:
  • Experience working with newcomers
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Arabic language skills.
