Job descriptionReporting to a Discipline Lead, Engineers / System Integrators participate in the design, development, implementation and documentation of marine systems and solutions. This role is accountable to gather and analyze technical information (including product data sheets, measurements and functional descriptions) to produce engineering designs, drawings, recommendations and instructions for project stakeholders. As a part of a discipline team, Engineers / System Integrators will contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives and the documentation of processes and practices to ensure standardization and quality control. Engineers / System Integrators may be called upon to provide project leadership, offering technical advice and guidance as well as assigning work to other technical resources. At times, this role will support business development activities through assisting with technical proposals/bids and by identifying new opportunities with existing clients.
Education Bachelor’s degree or diploma in electrical engineering or a related field
Designation as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) or Professional Project Manager (PMP) is an asset
Knowledge, Skills & Experience This role accepts Engineers / System Integrators / Designers / Techs with varying levels of experience. New hires are placed in appropriate Levels (1 – 4) based on their knowledge, skills and experience.
Experience in the design, development and implementation of electrical generation, distribution and/or conversion systems, SCADA systems, integrated platform systems, associated technologies and/or system integration
Experience in the marine industry is an asset
Technical project management or coordination experience is an asset
Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, CADMATIC or similar is an asset
Analytical problem solving and decision-making
Ability to work effectively within a team environment and across multiple projects
Ability to manage a diverse workload while prioritizing time and resources
Effective communication, interpersonal and customer relation skills
Proficiency at the intermediate level in the use of MS Office products, including Word, Excel and Outlook
Responsibilities Provides engineering and design expertise for marine vessels; advances technical breadth and aptitude and applies knowledge and skills across the disciplines of: Power, Controls, Integration, Build and Design toward the execution of projects.
Deliver on the design, development, integration and documentation of marine systems
Ensure that engineering deliverables meet regulatory standards, contract and client requirements
Produce design documents that include but are not limited to single line diagrams, electrical schematics, electrical load analysis, equipment arrangements, cable specification, interface control documents, short circuit / coordination / arc flash analysis, reports and surveys
Develop material specifications and bills of material in accordance with client strategies and requirements
Provide guidance and direction to suppliers and subcontractors related to electrical systems design, achieving contract, cost and schedule performance
Communicate with production and installation workers to clarify design details and receive feedback for improvements
Integrate multiple systems into a cohesive and reliable marine architecture
Contribute to the execution of projects on time, on budget and to a high standard of technical engineering excellence regularly collaborating and interfacing with a supportive project management function.
Interface with a supportive project management function through regularly collaborating with the project management team for project initiating, planning, execution, monitoring / controlling and closing of projects ensuring timely and efficient project execution
Actively contribute to project reporting needs including communicating task status and progression through deliverables
Contribute to project technical reviews ensuring all designs meet industry regulations and client specifications; liaise with production personnel to clarify design details and implement feedback
Engage with clients as needed, supporting technical discussions and design reviews; supporting procurement with technical specifications and vendor evaluations, as needed
Participate in the advancement of the Company’s technical expertise and capability through a focus on standardization and continuous quality improvement; contribute to the development of tools, templates and operating procedures.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures, templates, design libraries, tools and processes related to the assigned discipline, including those required for efficient transfer of data between design products and across disciplines
Support the Quality function in developing and maintaining quality control and assurance procedures for related services and deliverables
Provide technical illustrations for documentation and manuals
Complete work in alignment to developed standards and procedures
Contribute on occasion to the company’s growth and business development through acting as a subject matter expert and resource in the creation of technical proposals and bids for engineering services and engineered solutions.
Collaborate with members of the business development team to build and maintain relationships with new and existing clients as required; participate in understanding technical requirements and aligning them with our services
Assist in the preparation of technical proposals, bids and RFP responses in collaboration with internal colleagues
Represent Canal at industry conferences, trade shows and networking events as required to promote brand visibility and generate leads
Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.
Special Requirements A valid driver’s license is required
Occasional travel may be required to Canal, design partners, vendors and client sites including shipyards and industry events
