Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Travel Manager to lead our Nanaimo branch's maritime and coastal travel segment. This leadership role combines hands-on client advising with team management, emphasizing bookings involving BC Ferries, high-speed ferries, coastal cruises (Alaska, Inside Passage, Canadian port departures), multi-island packages, and group travel for leisure, corporate, and incentive clients. The successful candidate will drive revenue growth in this niche while delivering the exceptional service Maritime Travel is known for.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and grow the branch's maritime / coastal portfolio, including BC Ferries reservations (vehicle / passenger bookings across Vancouver Island routes), cruise packages (especially Alaska roundtrips and coastal voyages departing from Vancouver), ferry-inclusive vacations to Gulf Islands, and related marine tourism.
- Oversee a team of travel counsellors / advisors, providing training, coaching, and performance support focused on maritime-specific products, seasonal sailing schedules, weather-impacted itineraries, and supplier partnerships (e.g., BC Ferries, cruise lines like Celebrity, Cunard, Regent Seven Seas).
- Handle complex bookings and consultations for groups, corporate accounts, and high-value clients planning coastal adventures, island-hopping, or cruise-ferry combinations.
- Negotiate preferred rates, group allocations, and promotions with ferry operators, cruise lines, hotels, and local tour providers on Vancouver Island and coastal BC.
- Monitor real-time ferry / cruise updates, disruptions, and policy changes; proactively manage client communications and rebookings.
- Contribute to branch marketing and promotions, highlighting Nanaimo as a gateway for Vancouver Island and coastal BC travel (e.g., Alaska departures, Inside Passage experiences).
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations, Maritime Travel policies, and client data privacy; maintain accurate booking records and financial reporting.
- Analyze performance metrics for maritime products, identify growth opportunities (e.g., seasonal cruise promotions), and collaborate on budgeting / forecasting.
- Provide top-tier customer service, resolving issues related to cancellations, refunds, overbookings, or itinerary adjustments in a dynamic, weather-sensitive environment.
- Participate in agency-wide initiatives, supplier fam trips, and professional development.
Qualifications & Requirements
5+ years of experience in the travel industry, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.Deep knowledge of maritime / coastal travel in British Columbia, including BC Ferries operations, Vancouver Island routes, Alaska cruises, and ferry-based itineraries (personal experience navigating BC's ferry system is highly valued).Proven expertise with cruise and ferry booking systems; familiarity with cruise line tools, BC Ferries commercial / group platforms, and agency reservation software.Strong leadership, sales, negotiation, and client relationship skills; ability to motivate a team in a retail branch setting.Post-secondary education in tourism, hospitality, business, or equivalent experience preferred.Valid driver's license and willingness to travel occasionally for supplier meetings, industry events, or the Annual Staff Conference (e.g., to Vancouver, Halifax, or cruise ports).Enthusiasm for travel, particularly coastal / marine experiences, with excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (part of the new hire process).What We Offer
Competitive base salary plus commission structure and performance incentives.Company Pension Plan : Eligibility to participate in Maritime Travel’s pension plan, with your minimum contribution of 3% of base salary matched by the company at 3%.Insurance Sales : Opportunity to earn 22.23% of the commission on Maritime Travel insurance products you sell.Medical and Dental Coverage : Mandatory group health plan (including life insurance and long-term disability) for permanent employees working more than 15 hours / week; medical and dental portions may be opted out if similar coverage exists elsewhere.
