Job description
Position Summary The Community Peer Support Worker plays a key supportive role within the Siksika Health Services Community STBBI Outreach Project. This position is intended for a younger community member who can relate to and build trust with individuals most commonly accessing STBBI services. Drawing on lived experience and peer connection, the Community Peer Support Worker provides nonjudgmental emotional support, outreach engagement, system navigation assistance, and harm reduction advocacy. The role helps reduce stigma and barriers to care by fostering trust, dignity, and culturally safe relationships. The Community Peer Support Worker collaborates closely with the Registered Nurse, outreach staff, and Community Elder to ensure services are welcoming, trauma-informed, and accessible. Responsibilities include, but will not be limited to: 1. Peer Support and Client Engagement - Provide compassionate, nonjudgmental support to individuals accessing STBBI testing, treatment, or harm reduction services. - Share lived experience appropriately to build trust and reduce stigma. - Accompany clients to appointments or outreach events when requested. - Assist clients in navigating health and social service systems. 2. Outreach and Community Connection - Participate in mobile clinics and pop-up testing events across Siksika Nation. - Engage youth and community members in informal conversations about sexual health and wellness. - Respond to outreach referrals and help connect individuals to SHS services. 3. Harm Reduction and Education Support - Assist with distribution of harm reduction supplies and “Our Healthbox” materials. - Support clients who access HIV self-testing kits and encourage follow-up care if desired. - Reinforce health education messages provided by clinical staff. - Promote safer sexual health practices through respectful peer dialogue. 4. Advocacy and Stigma Reduction - Advocate for respectful and equitable treatment of clients. - Help reduce stigma related to STBBIs, substance use, and sexual health. - Provide feedback to the outreach team regarding community needs and service gaps. 5. Program and Team Participation - Attend team meetings and training sessions. - Assist with outreach event planning and logistics. - Contribute to program improvement discussions. - Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times Education & Experience - Lived experience relevant to STBBIs, harm reduction, or peer recovery support valued. - Experience in community outreach, youth engagement, or wellness support preferred. - High school diploma or equivalent preferred. - Willingness to complete training in STBBIs, harm reduction, confidentiality, and trauma-informed care. Other Requirements - Valid Driver’s license with reliable transportation. - Full criminal record clearance, vulnerable sector check, and immunization records required. - Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends, to meet community needs. - Ability to speak an Indigenous language and knowledge of Indigenous culture. - Moderate knowledge of the philosophy and issues regarding the delivery of First Nation health care.
