Senior Software Engineer (Backend Focused) Stack: Next.js · NestJS · Postgres Location: Hybrid – Calgary, Alberta Position Type: Full-time & Permanent Reporting: Reports to Director of Software About Highwood Our mission is to collaborate, innovate, and educate our way to a world with effective and affordable emissions management solutions. Your mission - Backend Excellence: While we are full-stack, your primary focus will be building robust, high-performance server-side logic and scalable architectures. - System Stability & Scale: Drive improvements in performance and observability as our data volume grows — we need someone who "respects the metal". - Technical Ownership: Take full responsibility for features from design to production. You don’t just write code; you deliver solutions. - Code Quality: Elevate the team through rigorous peer reviews and a commitment to maintainable engineering standards. About You - Backend-First Mindset: You are a TypeScript expert who prefers the logic of NestJS and the reliability of a well-architected API over styling components. - SQL & Data Mastery: You don’t just use an ORM; you understand relational database design and know how to optimize queries for high-load scenarios. - Pragmatic Intensity: You understand that "shipping" is a feature. You can balance technical debt with the speed required in a growing startup. - Cloud-Native Experience: You are comfortable working with AWS to deploy and monitor scalable services. - Pragmatic Problem Solver: You value shipping value over perfection and can balance technical debt with the need for speed. - System Thinker: You look beyond the immediate task to understand how your changes affect the entire ecosystem.
