Job description
Company Overview A well-established, family-run excavation contractor with over 15 years of experience operating across the Lower Mainland. The business has successfully transitioned into its second generation of leadership and continues to grow while maintaining strong relationships with repeat clients and trusted subcontractors. The company specializes in deep excavation for high-rise developments and large underground parking structures, along with select smaller scopes such as fill sites. Typically operating 2–3 major projects at any given time, with individual project values ranging from $2M to $5M. The organization is well-equipped, financially stable, and positioned for continued growth, including potential expansion opportunities through strategic acquisition. Position Overview The company is seeking an experienced Earthworks Estimator to step into a key role as part of a planned transition within the leadership team. This is a hands-on position requiring strong excavation knowledge, minimal oversight, and the ability to independently manage take-offs, pricing, and tender submissions. The Estimator will work closely with senior leadership, project management, and operations, playing a critical role in bid accuracy, profitability, and seamless project handover to field teams. Typical Project Scope - High-rise building excavation - Underground and structured parking excavation - Large-scale bulk excavation - Dirt removal volumes typically ranging from 50,000–90,000 m³ per project - Shoring is subcontracted to a long-standing partner with established pricing advantages Key Responsibilities Estimating & Tendering - Prepare detailed earthworks take-offs and estimates from IFC and tender drawings - Price excavation scopes including: - Bulk and detailed excavation - Mass haul and material balancing - Export/import and disposal - Temporary access and sequencing considerations - Review drawings, geotechnical reports, and specifications - Develop pricing using Excel-based estimating tools - Coordinate with shoring subcontractors for accurate pricing - Prepare scopes, assumptions, clarifications, and exclusions - Submit competitive and well-structured tenders on time Pre-Construction & Handover - Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits as required - Support smooth handover from estimating to project management and field teams - Assist with budget setup and early-stage project planning - Provide pricing support for changes and additional work Collaboration & Internal Support - Work directly with senior leadership, project management, and field operations teams - Ensure estimates reflect realistic production rates and equipment utilization - Maintain and continuously improve historical cost data Qualifications & Experience - 5+ years of experience estimating excavation / earthworks projects - Proven experience with high-rise or large-scale excavation - Strong knowledge of production rates, mass haul, and sequencing - Ability to work independently with minimal supervision - Proficiency in Excel-based estimating tools - Working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar take-off software - Strong organizational and communication skills
