Position Overview: We are seeking an accomplished and strategically minded Director of Health & Safety to lead, develop, and continuously enhance our health and safety programs across all operational functions. This senior leadership role is instrumental in cultivating a robust safety culture within a dynamic waste management and environmental services environment. The successful candidate will ensure full regulatory compliance while driving proactive risk management initiatives that protect our workforce and support long-term organizational objectives. Key Responsibilities: Leadership & Strategy - Develop and execute a comprehensive Health & Safety strategy aligned with the organization’s mission, values, and business objectives. - Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of Health & Safety professionals across multiple operational sites. - Partner with senior leadership and the executive team to embed safety as a core business priority and key performance indicator. Compliance & Risk Management - Ensure full compliance with all applicable federal and provincial health and safety regulations, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Ministry of Labour requirements. - Oversee internal and external audits, workplace inspections, and all regulatory reporting obligations. - Lead thorough incident investigations, root cause analyses, and the development of effective corrective and preventive action plans. Program Development - Design, implement, and continuously improve safety policies, standard operating procedures, and comprehensive training programs. - Drive organization-wide initiatives related to hazard identification, risk assessment, and prevention strategies. - Oversee contractor safety management programs and ensure third-party compliance with company standards. Operational Support - Collaborate closely with operations teams across all service lines—including collection, transfer stations, recycling, and landfill operations—to ensure adherence to safe work practices. - Conduct regular site visits and safety audits across all facilities and operational locations. - Support operational leaders in managing safety performance, accountability, and continuous improvement at the site level. Culture & Continuous Improvement - Champion a proactive, prevention-oriented safety culture grounded in accountability and employee engagement. - Track, analyze, and report on key safety performance metrics, including Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), Lost Time Injury Rate (LTIR), near-miss frequency, and leading indicators. - Lead continuous improvement initiatives to systematically reduce incidents and enhance overall workplace safety standards. Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related discipline. - Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation strongly preferred; additional certifications (e.g., CHSC, CSP, CIH) considered an asset. - Minimum of 8 years of progressive Health & Safety experience, including 3–5 years in a senior leadership capacity. - Demonstrated experience in waste management, construction, transportation, or heavy industrial operating environments is strongly preferred. - Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian health and safety legislation, regulatory frameworks, and industry best practices. - Proven track record of leading audits, Certificate of Recognition (COR) programs, and safety management systems.
