Your Opportunity:

Help lead healthcare delivery in Alberta Health Services’ next chapter!

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is now seeking a dynamic leader for the role Chief Operating Officer, Clinical Operations to lead and oversee healthcare delivery across Northern Alberta.

In this role, the Chief Operating Officer, Clinical Operations will provide executive leadership and operational oversight for all acute care delivery in northern Alberta, inclusive of over 25,000 staff in the Northeast, Northwest, Edmonton Urban, and Edmonton Rural corridors. In this role, you will drive innovation, operational efficiency, and performance. You will connect strategic plans and high-level goals with the daily delivery of patient care to ensure health care is high quality, accessible, and sustainable.

This is an onsite position that can be located anywhere in Northern Alberta and requires travel throughout Northern Alberta.

Please note that the salary structure for this position is under review and the starting salary will be less than the band maximum.

In a refocused healthcare system, AHS plays an integral role in delivering high-quality acute care services to more than 4.5 million people living in Alberta, as well as occasionally to some residents of other provinces and territories. We are a nation-leading hospital-based service provider operating 106 facilities across the province and we are dedicated to excellence in patient care. Showcase your leadership skills at AHS, where we strive to foster an environment where patients, clients, and staff feel safe, healthy, valued, and supported.

Description:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO), Clinical Operations is an executive role in Alberta Health Services (AHS) responsible for hospital-based services in accordance with established expectations and standards, through the Hospital Based Leadership framework and according to patient-focused funding.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Clinical Operations, the COO will provide executive leadership and operational oversight for all acute care delivery in the North (Northeast, Northwest, Edmonton Urban, and Edmonton Rural corridors). With over 25,000 employees and over $2B operating budget, the COO ensures seamless integration and coordination of clinical standards and priorities across corridors to meet patient needs and ensure high quality acute care services.

The COO is accountable for supporting hospital-based leaders in achieving established targets through an accountability and performance management framework which includes the following domains: service configuration, clinical care delivery, patient flow, quality improvement and innovation, financial management, workforce management, capital expenditure, procurement, community engagement, and risk management and safety.

The COO will collaborate with AHS’ executive leadership team, medical leadership, and internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective oversight of operations. The role is accountable for advancing AHS’ strategic vision by fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence while ensuing compliance with provincial regulations and professional standards.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in healthcare administration or related field. A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare operations, with at least 5 years in a senior executive role overseeing acute care delivery functions. A combination of qualifications and experience may be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience leading, supporting and assisting in the development of senior operations leaders. Proven expertise in managing complex care delivery systems, in urban and rural environments. Demonstrated success in developing and implementing acute care delivery systems that improve patient care. A track record of building collaborative partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, healthcare providers, and communities.

Preferred Qualifications:
