Commissioning and Start‑Up Operator (Industrial Facility)
Job Overview
The Commissioning and Start‑Up Operator supports the safe and efficient commissioning and start‑up of industrial plants and facilities. Reporting directly to the Commissioning Operator Lead, this role is responsible for executing field‑based commissioning, testing, and start‑up activities across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control, and operating systems. The position is hands‑on and operational, ensuring systems are installed, tested, and transitioned to operations in accordance with approved commissioning plans and safety standards.
Roles and Responsibilities
Commissioning Execution Support
Carry out commissioning and start‑up activities in accordance with approved commissioning procedures, schedules, and guidance from the Commissioning Operator Lead.
Support pre‑commissioning, commissioning, and start‑up sequencing activities in the field.
Provide timely feedback to the Lead regarding system readiness, risks, deficiencies, and execution constraints.
Installation Verification and Pre‑Commissioning
Verify mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation installations against drawings, specifications, and applicable codes.
Perform system walkdowns, identify punch list items, and confirm construction completion.
Assist with pre‑commissioning activities including loop checks, equipment inspections, lubrication, alignment, and cleanliness verification.
Confirm readiness for energization, pressurization, or introduction of process media.
Testing and Start‑Up Operations
Execute system and equipment test procedures, including functional, operational, and performance testing.
Participate in energization, flushing, leak testing, and initial equipment runs under direction of the Lead.
Support start‑up of utilities, process systems, rotating equipment, and packaged units.
Identify abnormalities during testing and assist with troubleshooting and resolution.
Operations and Control Systems Support
Operate plant systems and equipment during commissioning and start‑up phases when authorized.
Assist with validation of control logic, alarms, interlocks, and shutdown systems.
Support ramp‑up activities and verify equipment and system performance meets design intent.
Assist in refining operating procedures based on commissioning outcomes.
Safety and Regulatory Compliance
Comply fully with site safety requirements, permits, LOTO procedures, and hazard controls.
Participate in safety meetings, JSAs, and commissioning hazard reviews.
Immediately report unsafe conditions, near misses, or incidents to the Commissioning Operator Lead.
Actively contribute to a strong safety culture in the field.
Documentation and Communication
Complete commissioning checklists, test sheets, logbooks, and field reports accurately.
Record test results, operating conditions, and system status for turnover documentation.
Assist in redline markups, as‑built documentation, and system handover packages.
Communicate progress and issues clearly to the Commissioning Operator Lead.
Team Collaboration and Transition to Operations
Work closely with commissioning technicians, operations, maintenance, engineering, and construction personnel.
Follow direction from the Commissioning Operator Lead to support coordinated, multi‑discipline execution.
Assist with operator training, system demonstrations, and handover to operations teams.
Support post‑start‑up stabilization and deficiency closure.
Qualifications and Experience
Valid 3rd or 4th Class Power Engineer certification (or equivalent jurisdictional qualification).
Technical diploma, trade certification, or equivalent industrial operations experience.
Min 10 years of experience supporting commissioning, start‑up, or plant operations in an industrial environment.
Working knowledge of mechanical equipment, electrical systems, instrumentation, and process operations.
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings, loop diagrams, and operating procedures.
Strong commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and safe operating practices.
Ability to follow detailed procedures, work independently, and perform under dynamic site conditions.
Willingness to work shifts, extended hours, and at remote or industrial project sites.
Reporting Relationship
Reports to: Commissioning Operator Lead
Works closely with: Commissioning Manager, Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Construction Teams
