Nature and Scope
The Community Safety & Fire Protection Assistant – Summer Student position will report to the Program Coordinator, Community Safety & Fire Protection, and provide program support for the Trades & Industrial department. As an employee of SIIT, this position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission and mandate.
General Accountability
The Summer Student will gain practical experience while developing key professional skills for future success. Working under the guidance of the Program Coordinator, the Student will support program planning, preparation, and organization, while also assisting with administrative operations within the T&I Department. The Student will strengthen their teamwork, communication, organizational, and leadership abilities by contributing to daily departmental activities and providing operational support as required. This position provides support as required and includes the following broad range of accountabilities:
Specific Accountabilities
- Assist with the Coordinator with preparation of workshops and presentations for students, clients and stakeholders related to programs and initiatives of the department
- Assist in maintaining the filing systems of the department
- Carry out quality control of data entry as required
- Print and prepare course and program materials, manuals and documents as required
- Support delivery of the Learn Not to Burn program
- Provide administrative support and back-up coverage in the office during periods of high workload and absences
- Assist in ensuring classroom and/or program resources are in place, in addition to assisting with set up and take down as required
- Assist with the organization of travel arrangements, course or conference registrations for the department
- Assist in data collection and collating of information or documents
- Provide additional support on special projects and department initiatives as required
Eligible participants are:
- First Nations and Inuit secondary and post-secondary students aged 18 to 30 inclusive
- Ordinarily resident on reserve or in recognized communities or on community lands
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Registered as students during the preceding academic year and who intend to return to studies in the next academic year
Position Requirements: Prior experience working with Microsoft Office suite of programs. A valid driver's licence is required as there is potential for travel to communities and SIIT locations across Saskatchewan. A satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector check is required for this position. This position is required and must be able to wear a mascot costume for long periods at a time and must have a full range of body movement.
As this position is considered safety sensitive, the incumbent will be subject to testing as per SIIT's Alcohol and Substances policy.
