Job descriptionWe’re looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join our Payments team in Canada & US. In this role, you aren't just building features, but you will architect resilient systems. You will own the technical delivery of mission critical systems that process millions of daily transactions, ensuring settlement accountability and operational excellence at a global scale.
For this role, you should be located in Canada, and able to work within EST/EDT hours. We offer a choice of fully remote, partially remote or fully office-based work environments (incities with local offices). What you'll be responsible for
High leverage Engineering : Own the technical delivery of mission critical, event based payment systems handling millions of daily transactions; you are responsible for the expansion and blast radius of architectural decisions across the organization.
Operational excellence : Define “what good looks like” by establishing modern standards of AI‑enabled workflows, high‑availability and resilient deployments, metric driven stewardship (SLOs) required for global scale payment systems reliability.
Architectural Pragmatism : Navigate from POC and experimentation to production via the path of least resistance exploring multiple solutions, recommending the most effective paths with bold bets and clear, iterative line of sight. You balance the rapid business value with long term system health.
Trusted Advisory : Shape engineering and product strategy jointly, not only as a bridge between cross functions but as a co‑author of technical roadmaps, a guardian of technical backlogs and a driving force behind engineering standards and cross‑team prioritization.
Mentorship and upleveling : Level up the organization by coaching and mentoring the engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
Engineering productivity : Drive engineering velocity by owning platforms, shared frameworks and automated guardrails that become building blocks to reduce complexity at the edges while compounding productivity.
What you’ll be bringing to the team
Staff‑Level Experience : Extensive experience as a staff engineer, with a proven track record of operational through large scale incidents and system failures, emerging with stronger architectures, sharper runbooks and lasting institutional knowledge.
Systems Thinking : Deep proficiency in at least one relevant tech stack combined with a systems‑level mindset for complex full‑stack architectures.
Modern Tooling : Hands‑on experience with AI‑assisted coding and deployment strategies to drive efficiency without sacrificing quality.
Communication : The ability to simplify complex technical tradeoffs for stakeholders and peers. You proactively identify and communicate associated risks, holding a firm but flexible point of view to navigate them with a data‑driven approach.
Who you are
Principled but pragmatic technical lead : You have strong opinions weakly held, ready to pivot when data shows a better path for the customer.
Continuous force multiplier : You not only solve problems but build systems, tools and people around you.
Owner & Advocate : You act with a sense of urgency and always walk backwards from the customer, treating the codebase, business strategy and stakeholders as your own.
Boundary‑spanning problem solver : You naturally operate across squads, the problems that excite you are the ones whose solutions become primitives, platforms or patterns.
Fintech or high‑scale tech experience (nice to have) : Previous experience at a fintech or tech company, specifically having worked in places that require deep intuition for data integrity and building of automated reconciliation systems that are auditable by design.
