Position We are looking for a Machine Learning & Computer Vision Intern to join our team for a summer student opportunity focused on automated geospatial digitization. This role is well suited to a student in Computer Science or a related program who is interested in applying machine learning, image processing, and Python development to challenging real‑world datasets.
The project focuses on transforming scanned geological maps and other raster‑based documents into structured GIS data. You will support the development of workflows that detect and classify mapped features such as boundaries, symbols, linework, and patterned areas, helping bridge the gap between unstructured imagery and usable spatial data. Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a Computer Science, Data Science, or related post‑secondary program and returning to school in the Fall of 2026.
Experience with Python from coursework, projects, research, or internships.
Familiarity with tools such as OpenCV, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team.
Experience with image segmentation, classification, or pattern recognition (an asset).
Familiarity with Rasterio, GeoPandas, GDAL, or geospatial data formats (an asset).
Foundational knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, or computer vision (an asset).
Exposure to handling large image datasets, augmentation, or mask generation (an asset).
Interest in GIS, remote sensing, geology, or applied AI (an asset).
Job Responsibilities
Support the development of computer vision and ML workflows for map feature detection and segmentation.
Assist with image pre‑processing, cleanup, and enhancement of scanned map data.
Help prepare training and testing datasets, including tiles, labels, and masks.
Test and evaluate algorithms for recognizing map features, symbols, and textures.
Write and improve Python scripts for data processing and workflow automation.
Help maintain documentation and reproducible project workflows.
Collaborate with GIS and technical team members to validate results and refine methods.
Ability to work at our downtown Toronto office location 2 days a week and from home 3 days a week.
Any other geological duties as required by your project supervisor.
