Job description

Business Intelligence Analyst (Power BI)


Contract Details:

  • Client: Confidential
  • Location: Hybrid - must be willing to appear onsite in Edmonton, Alberta (3-4 times per fiscal year)
  • Contract Duration: May 2026 - March 31 2027
  • Language: English
  • Rate: Open to Negotiation - let's find a rate that works for you



Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop complex dashboards, scorecards, and visual analytics using Power BI
  • Design, develop, and maintain data models and visualizations using Microsoft Power BI
  • Data Modeling & ETL Development
  • Create optimized, reusable data models using DAX and Power Query M for enterprise-wide reporting
  • Build interactive dashboards and reports tailored to business needs using Microsoft Power BI
  • Integrate Power BI with various Microsoft Azure data sources and on-premises databases
  • Work closely with Business users, data architects and data engineers to manage data pipelines, staging areas, and semantic models.
  • Work with business units to gather reporting requirements and KPIs
  • Translate ambiguous business questions into concrete BI solutions.
  • Present insights and findings in clear, executive-friendly formats.
  • Provide end-user training and support to ensure adoption of BI tools
  • Maintain and publish datasets and dashboards in Power BI Service with scheduled refreshes and alerts
  • Optimize dashboards and reports for performance
  • Implement security and user access controls within Power BI
  • Implement incremental data refresh, row-level security (RLS), and performance tuning strategies in Power BI


What We’re Looking For:


Mandatory:

  • Post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate in Computer Science or related field.
  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and optimizing Power BI solutions.
  • Hands-on expertise with SQL for data transformation, analytics, and large-scale environments.
  • Superb storytelling and visualization skills to communicate insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to translate complex stakeholder needs into practical BI solutions.


Nice to Have:

  • Hands-on practice with environmental or government datasets (e.g., Water Licensing, Ambient Monitoring).
  • Proficiency in developing complex measures and advanced time intelligence with DAX.
  • Familiarity with Power BI Service features like RLS, workspaces, and incremental data refreshes.
  • Strong background in using data insights for executive communication within government organizations.
