Job description

Seaspan employees are goal-driven and thrive in a high-performance culture. Our integrated business model, with over 25 years of fleet life-cycle management expertise, provides the world’s major shipping companies with long-term leases on large, modern and technologically advanced vessels, combined with industry-leading ship management services. As owner and operator of the vessels, we provide skilled officers and crews dedicated to the safe, reliable, and economical operation of our fleet. Seaspan's fleet has evolved over time to meet the varying needs of our customer base. We own vessels in a wide range of sizes, from 2,500 TEU to 24,000 TEU. Our main operating offices are located in Singapore, Vancouver, Hong Kong, and Mumbai.

As a member of the Marine Standards team, the Alternate Fuels Specialist is responsible for the effective implementation of the company Management System. In consultation with Director, Marine Standards, the Specialist will develop policies, procedures and objectives in the areas of health, safety, security, incident investigation and emergency response.

Responsibilities:

  • Be familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy, and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS). In keeping with this and other compliance policies, they understand their duty to report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and guidelines for safe operation of dual fuel and alternate fuel systems (including LNG, Methanol, Ammonia), in line with the IGF Code, IMO guidelines, and class requirements.
  • Reviews and approves risk assessments, bunkering plans, and operational procedures related to LNG and other alternate fuel operations, ensuring risks are identified and mitigated to ALARP.
  • Supports vessels during LNG and alternate fuel bunkering operations by providing guidance on safety controls, exclusion zones, cargo restrictions, and emergency preparedness.
  • Leads incident investigations related to alternate fuels, including gas releases, ESD activations, near misses, and system failures, and ensures lessons learned are embedded into SMS.
  • Develops and maintains procedures for fuel changeover, gas freeing, purging, inerting, and emergency shutdown (ESD) operations for dual fuel vessels.
  • Monitors developments in alternate fuel technologies, regulatory changes (IMO, Flag, Class), and industry best practices, and translates them into company procedures and guidance.
  • Engages with external stakeholders including charterers, terminals, bunker suppliers, and classification societies on operational constraints and safety requirements associated with alternate fuel usage.
  • Identifies gaps in existing regulations and company procedures related to alternate fuels and proactively develops risk-based solutions.
  • Supports emergency response scenarios involving alternate fuels, including LNG leaks, fire/explosion risks, and cryogenic hazards.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience with alternative fuel systems on dry fleet vessels powered by alternative fuels is preferred. Candidates with experience on LNG or LPG carriers will also be considered.
  • Min 3 years experience on LNG or other alternate fuel ships as officer or engineer.
  • Strong working knowledge of the regulatory landscape governing alternative fuels, including the IGF Code, relevant IMO MSC Circulars, classification society rules, and industry guidelines from SGMF and equivalent bodies.
  • Solid understanding of critical safety systems on alternative fuelled vessels, including Emergency Shutdown (ESD), gas detection, and fire detection and suppression arrangements.
  • Ability to draft Safety Management System procedures covering operational and emergency response aspects of alternative fuel use, bunkering, and onboard handling.
  • Ability to understand real world challenges faced by crew and translate them into procedures that guide and support shipboard teams, rather than create unnecessary obstacles.
  • Capability to coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including charterers, terminals, and class. Must be able to explain the rationale behind safety restrictions impacting cargo loadability during bunkering, and secure stakeholder acceptance while balancing safety, crew welfare, environmental protection, and commercial considerations.
  • Team oriented mindset with the ability to work across functions, including new build design, technical, operations, and HSQE. Must provide constructive input on alternative fuel system design and refine procedures collaboratively.
  • Research driven mindset with the discipline to stay current on emerging fuels, evolving regulations, and industry best practice.
  • Strong safety mindset with the ability to identify safety gaps not yet covered by regulations, and to work with multiple teams to develop practical solutions.
  • Ability to weigh competing priorities such as safety, regulatory compliance, operational practicality, and commercial impact, and arrive at decisions that are balanced and defensible.

Compensation and Benefits Package:

Seaspan’s total compensation is based on our pay-for-performance philosophy that rewards team members who deliver on and demonstrate our high-performance culture. The pay range for this position is expected to be $84,000 - $105,000 CAD per annum. The exact base salary offered will be commensurate with the incumbent’s experience, job-related skills and knowledge, and internal pay equity.

Seaspan Corporation is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected Veteran status. We thank all applicants in advance. If your application is shortlisted to be included in the interview process, one of our team will be in contact with you.
