Construction Resident Engineer (Mechanical)
Location: Remote Mining Site – Northern Ontario
Rotation: 7 days on / 7 days off
(Open to strong candidates interested in 14/14 rotations)
Work Type: Independent Contractor
Contract Duration: Initial 1-year contract through a recruitment partner, with strong potential to extend through the full 3+ year capital project duration.
Overview
Our client, a major Canadian mining operator, is building out a long-term construction and engineering team to support ongoing mining and heavy industrial capital projects.
We are seeking a Construction Resident Engineer (Mechanical) with strong field execution and construction support experience within mining or heavy industrial environments. This is a highly site-focused role centered around field engineering, construction coordination, technical problem-solving, and onsite execution support.
This position is ideal for an engineer who has spent significant time in the field and understands the realities of construction execution in remote industrial operations — not solely office-based or design engineering environments.
The successful candidate will act as a key liaison between engineering teams, construction supervisors, contractors, QA/QC personnel, and onsite execution groups while supporting multiple heavy industrial and mechanical infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide onsite field engineering support during construction and project execution activities
- Maintain strong field presence through regular site walks, inspections, and engagement with contractor teams
- Support construction supervisors and contractors with technical guidance, troubleshooting, and issue resolution
- Perform field measurements, alignment checks, site verifications, and constructability reviews
- Act as the primary liaison between engineering offices, construction teams, and field operations
- Review drawings, RFIs, submittals, field changes, and construction modifications as required
- Assist with installation and execution activities involving conveyors, shaker screens, paste plant systems, building envelopes, and other heavy industrial mechanical infrastructure
- Monitor construction progress, quality, safety, and compliance with engineering specifications and project standards
- Support QA/QC activities including inspections, NCR reviews, ITP reviews, and field quality verification
- Participate in pre-task planning, field coordination meetings, and progress review discussions
- Identify technical risks, constructability conflicts, and engineering bottlenecks that may impact execution or schedule
- Provide technical input to support recovery planning and field execution strategies when required
- Maintain accurate field documentation including site observations, inspection records, progress updates, and photographic logs
- Promote and reinforce a strong HSE and Zero Harm culture onsite
- Coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams including construction, engineering, QA/QC, surveying, and contract administration personnel
- Operate with a high level of autonomy in a fast-paced construction environment
Qualifications
- Mechanical Engineering degree required
- P.Eng designation preferred
- Minimum 5–10+ years of field engineering, resident engineering, or construction support experience within mining or heavy industrial environments
- Strong onsite construction and field execution experience is essential
- Experience supporting contractors, construction supervisors, and field crews in active construction environments
- Demonstrated experience working on conveyors, process plants, mechanical systems, industrial infrastructure, or heavy mechanical installations
- Strong understanding of field construction practices, engineering drawings, specifications, and construction sequencing
- Experience reviewing RFIs, field changes, submittals, and construction modifications
- Ability to work effectively in remote mining environments under rotational schedules
- Consulting engineering or EPCM experience is considered an asset; however, candidates must demonstrate substantial field exposure
- Strong communication, coordination, and stakeholder management skills across multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to work independently and make sound field-based engineering decisions in real-time construction environments
