Job description

Who are we?

Equinix is the world’s digital infrastructure company®, shortening the path to connectivity to enable the innovations that enrich our work, life and planet.

A place where tech thinkers and future builders turn bold ideas into breakthrough experiences, we welcome your unique perspective.Help us challenge assumptions, uncover bias, and remove barriers—because progress starts with fresh ideas. You’ll find belonging, purpose, and a team that welcomes you—because when you feel valued, you’re empowered to do your best work.

Job Summary

The Principal Value Stream Lead is an expert‑level individual contributor responsible for driving end‑to‑end value delivery across complex, cross‑functional engineering initiatives. This role operates at the intersection of technical strategy, system architecture, and execution, ensuring that work across multiple teams translates into durable business and customer outcomes.

The Principal Value Stream Lead owns the health, direction, and results of one or more value streams, identifying systemic bottlenecks, resolving deeply complex technical and delivery challenges, and shaping how work flows from idea to production at scale. The role does not include direct people management responsibilities; instead, it relies on technical authority, systems thinking, and influence to align senior engineers, engineering managers, and product stakeholders.

This position is designed for a seasoned technical leader with deep expertise in multiple domains, who thrives in ambiguity, thinks holistically across systems and organizations, and consistently raises the bar for engineering impact across the company.

Responsibilities

General

  • Uses extensive experience, professional concepts, and company objectives to resolve highly complex, ambiguous, and cross‑cutting engineering and delivery challenges

  • Determines methods, approaches, and success criteria for new, multi‑team initiatives with significant technical and organizational impact

  • Owns one or more end‑to‑end value streams, accountable for outcomes from strategy and design through execution and operations

Technical

  • Sets direction and leads by example in architecture, technical design quality, and system‑level decision making

  • Designs and influences large‑scale systems with many dependencies and moving parts, ensuring scalability, efficiency, reliability, and long‑term maintainability

  • Diagnoses and drives resolution of complex, high‑impact production and systemic issues

  • Introduces and scales best practices learned through cross‑functional and cross‑domain collaboration

  • Provides technical leadership across initiatives involving product management, project management, and architects

Technical (Quality / Platform / Reliability Focus)

  • Drives non‑functional excellence across value streams, including reliability, scalability, security, performance, and operational readiness

  • Owns and influences CI/CD, platform, and delivery health goals across multiple teams

  • Defines epics and technical initiatives for cross‑cutting non‑functional requirements, influencing architectural evolution to achieve long‑term goals

  • Evaluates and drives adoption of appropriate platforms, tools, and technologies aligned with value‑stream needs

  • Establishes expert‑level methodologies for production quality, observability, and performance assurance

Dealing with Ambiguity

  • Defines technical and delivery strategy in areas with incomplete, evolving, or conflicting requirements

  • Partners with product and engineering stakeholders to create clarity, alignment, and decision frameworks

  • Effectively context‑switches across multiple initiatives and domains while maintaining strategic coherence

Process

  • Drives step‑change improvements in delivery flow, throughput, and predictability across the value stream

  • Thinks on behalf of customers and the business, diving deep into root causes of systemic issues and proposing durable solutions

  • Identifies structural inefficiencies (dependencies, ownership gaps, bottlenecks) and leads improvement efforts across teams

Scope and Impact

  • Owns and evolves the architecture, execution health, and technical integrity of large, multi‑team software and data systems

  • Accountable for quality, reliability, and operational outcomes across an entire value stream

  • Influences decisions with organization‑wide impact spanning platforms, data, and AI‑enabled systems

Leadership

  • Owns customer‑facing KPIs and quality metrics for the value stream and drives accountability for outcomes

  • Collaborates with and influences senior engineers, engineering managers, product leaders, and cross‑functional stakeholders on complex technical and delivery decisions

  • Recognized expert in one or more technical domains; mentors senior and staff engineers

  • Acts as a true owner—thinks on behalf of customers, platforms, and long‑term system health

  • Navigates complex challenges, viewing them as opportunities to improve systems, teams, and outcomes

  • Contributes actively to the principal‑level technical community, raising standards across the organization

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience

  • Demonstrated experience leading large‑scale, cross‑functional engineering initiatives

  • Expertise in Python and/or Java programming languages

  • Deep expertise in at least 2 of the following areas:

    Cloud architecture (GCP preferred)

    Graph databases

    MLOps

    Agentic workflows
