The IESO is committed to ensuring Ontario’s electricity system meets the province’s needs today and into the future. We are charged with purpose, delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity for homes, businesses, and communities across the province. We are energized to grow, embracing opportunities to shape the future of a dynamic and evolving energy sector while advancing our careers. We are powered by teamwork, supported by diverse and passionate colleagues who foster respect, celebrate successes, and thrive on shared achievements. At the IESO, it’s not just what we do – it’s who we are!

Who we are Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real‑time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation, protecting the system from threats, advancing the province’s energy conservation programs, and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources we’ll need in the decades to come.

This is a unionized position that falls within the Power System Development Business Unit.

What makes this role exciting The energy sector is rapidly evolving, offering exciting new opportunities for those who want to make a difference.

What you’ll do

Leading engineering studies required for NERC planning assessments, NPCC Area Transmission Reviews, planning and reliability outlooks, and resource and transmission procurements. This includes steady‑state and transient assessments of the power system.

Assess transfer capability of the Ontario and Interconnected bulk system in the near‑term and long‑term planning horizons to ensure system adequacy and security, and in support of resource acquisitions.

Perform NERC/NPCC/Market Rules compliance activities, specifically:

Prepare and deliver evidence demonstrating compliance with NERC and NPCC requirements, including internal control documentation, work procedures, reliability standard audit worksheets, market manuals and training material.

Participate in reliability audits and presenting the evidence, as required.

Act as a subject matter expert for the IESO to support Market Participant compliance, such as: reviewing Market Rule exemption applications, reviewing NERC/NPCC Compliance Plans and Mitigation Plans, as necessary.

Guiding the evolution of planning processes, tools, and practices to align with future needs and community and stakeholder expectations.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the state‑of‑the‑art on transmission technologies, best practices related to transmission planning and integrated resource planning, and assist in bringing relevant external trends and practices to IESO’s planning.

Participate in economic evaluation of different options for meeting reliability needs as a transmission planning subject matter expert.

Manage the work of external consultants acquired to support planning activities.

Act as a subject matter expert to other departments and/or business units on matters related to transmission planning and emerging transmission technologies.

Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to assess transmission needs and drivers to creatively develop integrated planning solutions.

Representing the IESO in community and stakeholder engagements, regulatory processes, and industry forums as a subject matter expert.

Mentoring junior staff and providing strategic leadership within the Transmission Planning team and across teams within the IESO.

Recently, this position was instrumental in the success of the recent Long‑term 2 Request for Proposal (RFP), successfully guiding the sector on where transmission capacity exists to site Energy (Wind, Solar) and Capacity (Battery, Gas) resources, and performing deliverability studies to inform contract awards. In parallel, this position led a comprehensive review of Ontario’s Bulk Power System; performing steady‑state and dynamic stability assessments for hundreds of thousands of scenarios to ensure the system is adequate to supply load five years into the future and to identify actions needed for the ten‑year horizon.

Role Requirements

Successful completion of an engineering/applied sciences degree from an accredited university or equivalent education

Engineering knowledge of electrical theory, power system analysis and control, mathematics, computer science and the like to conduct engineering, economic or analytical studies related to the management and control of the bulk power system

Knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports. Requires knowledge of how to deliver presentations on technical topics

Power system planning, operation, practices, and policies

Electric energy, capacity, ancillary service and transmission rights market operations, practices, policies

Market Rules

Experience with NERC/NPCC standards/criteria development and application to power system studies

A period of over 8 years, and up to and including 10 years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.

How We Support You

Compensation packages that are regularly reviewed to remain competitive and to best accommodate the diverse needs of our employees.

The IESO currently has a 3‑day in‑office work week for applicable roles. Over the course of 2026, the IESO will advance plans to acquire additional office space to accommodate more in‑office time.
