Job description
Job Overview Position Title: Sr Engineer, Integrated Planning

Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Weekly Hours: 40

Business Unit: Electricity Operations

About the Department Electricity Operations is responsible for the electrical transmission and distribution systems in and around Edmonton. We are focused on safety, reliability, and innovative and practical solutions. Our employees look after electrical infrastructure as well as the underground and aerial distribution networks.

Key Responsibilities

Provide input to the Manager, Integrated Planning & Analytics plans and other Electricity stakeholders, with respect to the development of project justifications and alternative analysis for transmission system upgrades.

Leading and managing the technical aspects of Transmission Major Projects’ justification, including long-term life cycle replacements. Ensure the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics. Analyze and identify issues impacting the project justification including productivity, quality, budget, constructability, direct-assign vs life-cycle replacement and on-time delivery.

Working with Electricity’s Integrated Planning, System Planning, Grid Modernization and Asset Management groups to determine viable options that address both system load growth and end of life asset management. Both immediate and ultimate system development will need to be addressed. This includes addressing a great deal of variability in load growth due to EVs, solar, Microgen, DERs, etc.

Work with industry technical experts (other Transmission Facility Operators, Underground cable, maintenance and planning) to determine the levels of risk EPCOR is exposed to by continuing to utilize assets that are approaching end of life and make recommendations on the acceptable level of risk and potential mitigation strategies.

Prepare and evaluate options that address the replacement of aged infrastructure and address anticipated load growth. This will include leading cross-functional technical teams to develop proposals, justifications, alternatives and estimates that address: transmission lines, underground cable, substations, P&C, Telecom, and SCADA.

Work with industry technical experts (other Transmission Facility Operators, Underground cable, maintenance and planning), EPCOR’s Regulatory department, the AESO and EPCOR senior management to develop a proposal to address anticipated system deficiencies.

Help develop an AUC submission that provides a clear picture of what is needed such that reliable power can be delivered. This will need to address various load growth scenarios, project timelines, and costs. It will also cover the various options that EPCOR considered to address the Need.

Act as a subject matter expert, assisting and coordinating in presenting major project developments such as the CETR proposal and land development process, internally and externally to parties such as the AESO, AUC, other TFOs or interveners, and address their concerns.

Assist in public consultation and open house events regarding the various options and modify the proposed options to address feedback while ensuring reliability, cost effectiveness, environmental and reputational stewardship.

Have a solid working understanding of transmission equipment such as breakers, transformers, switchgear as well as transmission system concerns including transmission level design, fault level analysis and equipment ratings.

Using knowledge of the Alberta regulatory process, support and/or participate on EPCOR’s hearing panel during any AUC hearings if required.

Authenticating engineering designs as per EPCOR’s Professional practice management plan (“PPMP”) and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (“APEGA”) guidelines.

Demonstrate a high performance, high discipline, safe, accountable, focused, innovative and achievement-oriented, easy to do business with manner of working.

Required Qualifications

Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering with Power System Engineering option (preferred) or equivalent P.L designation in Electrical Engineering Technology, APEGA registered.
