Role Details
Job Title: Tug Boat Captain (Master 60 GT or higher)
Location: Oshawa to Scarborough, Ontario (Lake Ontario)
Company: Strong Bros. General Contracting Ltd.
Shift/Hours: Project-based schedule (hours vary based on operations and weather conditions)
Compensation Range: $40.00 – $65.00 per hour (based on experience)
Start Date: May 1, 2026
Duration: Approximately 2.5 months

About This Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused Tug Boat Captain to support a marine construction project along the Lake Ontario shoreline between Oshawa and Scarborough.
This role involves operating a ~36 GT tug vessel to transport materials (primarily rock), support barge operations, and coordinate with a multi-vessel and on-site construction team. The successful candidate will be confident operating in a dynamic, high-responsibility environment and capable of working both independently and collaboratively.
Responsibilities:
Marine Operations:
Safely operate and command a ~36 GT tug vessel in a commercial construction environment
Transport materials (rock and other aggregates) between designated locations
Perform towing and maneuvering of barges and support vessels
Assist with vessel positioning to support excavator and shoreline work
Safety & Compliance:
Conduct pre-trip, post-trip, and routine vessel inspections
Ensure compliance with all applicable marine safety regulations and company policies
Maintain accurate logs and operational records
Monitor vessel systems and respond to basic mechanical issues as required
Coordination & Communication:
Work closely with:
Site Superintendent (on-site)
Project Manager (Belleville-based)
Other vessel operators and crew
Coordinate activities with additional tug boats, barges, and site equipment
Maintain clear and consistent communication across the marine and site teams
Required Qualifications
Valid Master 60 GT Certificate of Competency or higher, issued by Transport Canada
Marine Emergency Duties (MED A3 or equivalent)
ROC-M (Restricted Operator Certificate – Maritime)
Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical
Demonstrated experience operating tug boats in commercial environments
Experience with towing, barge handling, and material transport
Preferred Experience
Experience in marine construction or shoreline projects
Familiarity with multi-vessel coordination
Basic mechanical knowledge of marine diesel systems
Experience working alongside heavy equipment (e.g., excavators on barges)
Work Environment
Active marine construction site operating along Lake Ontario
Fleet includes:
Multiple tug boats (including smaller support vessels)
Barges
Excavation and support equipment
On-site team includes:
Site Superintendent
Additional Boat Captain(s)
Equipment Operator(s)
Mechanic
