JOB SUMMARY

The Employee Experience unit of the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) is responsible for implementing employee-related solutions that support the achievement of the OPL’s business outcomes, including: staff training, development and orientation, including needs identification; employee-related plans and functional strategies such as OPL Recruitment and employee engagement; providing organization development advice and assistance; coordinating the roll-out and maintenance of HR systems with the City of Ottawa; developing and implementing new HR products and services across the OPL; and managing the OPL Volunteer Program.

You provide, facilitate and support a comprehensive program of staff training and development for the OPL system; research and implement training and development opportunities; implement evaluation methodology; ensure the recording of training attendance; and track the OPL training budget.

Work is performed within the context of the policies and framework of the Library corporate culture as embodied in the Mission Statement, Core Values, Customer Experience Guidelines and the Canadian Federation of Library Association position statements on Intellectual Freedom and Diversity and Inclusion, with particular emphasis on providing customer service excellence.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 4 year university degree in Adult Education, Training, Organizational Development or related field

Minimum of 3 years of related experience in areas such as designing and conducting training programs, second-language delivery, and career development

Some experience working in a library environment is desirable

KNOWLEDGE

  • Current training needs assessment and evaluation practices
  • Principles and practices of adult education including non-classroom learning methodologies such as web based training
  • Marketing and communication strategies
  • Career development practices
  • Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Legislation and policies affecting training and development
  • Desktop applications, intranet and Internet and keyboarding procedures, to the extent where it may be required to demonstrate such usage to colleagues.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques and protocols
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships at all levels within the Library.

  • Plan and organize at an advanced level.
  • Data-entry, retrieval and keyboarding skills including use of standard office equipment, including operating an IBM compatible computer in Microsoft Windows.
  • Customer service orientation, including the use of tact, discretion and confidentiality

  • Flexibility, ability to adjust priorities.
