Job Description

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Manager - Environment to provide technical leadership in mine closure and environmental management within our Toronto head office.

This role is primarily focused on mine closure planning and the technical defensibility of Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO). The successful candidate will serve as a key technical lead supporting global closure strategies and the annual ARO review process, working closely with Corporate Finance and site teams to ensure alignment between closure approaches, cost estimates, financial disclosures, and life-of-mine planning.

In addition to this core mandate, the role will contribute to broader environmental priorities—including ESG reporting, biodiversity, and nature-related financial disclosures (e.g., TNFD)—working in collaboration with internal subject matter experts. These areas are not expected to be pre-existing areas of deep expertise but represent important opportunities for growth and contribution.

Reporting to the Vice President, Environment and Permitting, this role requires a balance of strong technical capability, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively across functions, including Finance, Operations, Sustainability, Corporate Responsibility, and site teams globally.

The position will apply a risk- and opportunity-based approach aligned with leading industry frameworks, including the ICMM Integrated Mine Closure Good Practice Guide, the World Gold Council Responsible Gold Mining Principles, the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining framework, and the emerging Consolidated Mining Standard.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of integrated mine closure plans, including progressive reclamation strategies.
  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert supporting the ARO estimation process, working closely with Corporate Finance and site teams to develop, review, and validate closure cost estimates (e.g., SRCE or equivalent tools).
  • Support the annual ARO review process by validating technical assumptions, strengthening the defensibility of inputs, and ensuring consistency across closure strategies, cost models, and financial disclosures (aligned with IFRS and jurisdictional requirements).
  • Ensure alignment between life-of-mine planning, closure strategies, and financial provisioning, identifying key risks, uncertainties, and opportunities for optimization.
  • Provide technical input on closure-related environmental risks, including ARD/ML, water management, tailings closure, and long-term geochemical and hydrogeological performance, in collaboration with internal subject matter experts.
  • Support and oversee progressive reclamation programs, ensuring alignment with operational plans and closure objectives.
  • Supporting Responsibilities (In Collaboration with Subject Matter Experts)
  • Contribute to ESG, biodiversity, and TNFD-related initiatives, including nature-related risk and opportunity assessments and integration into closure planning.
  • Support technical studies, including feasibility studies and Environmental Impact Assessments (or equivalent), with a focus on closure strategy, post-closure land use, and long-term environmental performance.
  • Support internal and external reviews related to closure planning, ARO provisioning, and environmental performance, ensuring technical robustness and review readiness.
  • Work with internal teams and specialists to incorporate spatial data and analysis (including GIS, where appropriate) into closure design, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Support stakeholder engagement efforts, in coordination with Corporate Responsibility teams, on closure and environmental topics as needed.
  • Leadership and Delivery
  • Manage external consultants and technical advisors, including scope development, oversight, budgeting, and quality assurance of deliverables.
  • Conduct periodic international site visits to assess closure progress, reclamation performance, and key environmental risks.
  • Prepare clear, defensible technical reports, Board materials, investor disclosures, and regulatory submissions.
  • Collaborate effectively across Operations, Finance, Legal, Sustainability, and Corporate Responsibility teams, while demonstrating strong independent project leadership.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • 10–15 years of progressive experience in environmental management within the mining industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mine closure planning, progressive reclamation, and ARO estimation.
  • Experience supporting or leading closure cost estimation using tools such as SRCE (or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of environmental and operational aspects of open pit and/or underground mining.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and managing external consultants.
  • Experience supporting or participating in environmental and/or financial audits.
  • Experience contributing to closure-related aspects of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments and permitting processes.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical teams, Finance, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across functions, particularly with Finance teams.
  • Multi-site mining experience and willingness to travel internationally (30–50%).
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a relevant discipline.

Preferred

  • Exposure to ESG reporting, biodiversity, or nature-related risk frameworks (e.g., TNFD).
  • Familiarity with leading industry standards such as the Responsible Gold Mining Principles, Towards Sustainable Mining, and closure-related good practice guidance.
  • Experience with Environmental Management Systems (e.g., ISO 14001) and integration of environmental liabilities into corporate reporting.
  • Familiarity with GIS or spatial data applications relevant to closure or environmental analysis.
  • Experience with geochemical or water balance modelling, or other predictive tools relevant to mine closure.
  • Professional designation (e.g., P.Eng., P.Geo.) or progress toward certification.
  • Experience working in international mining jurisdictions (e.g., Latin America, Africa).
  • Working proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, or French.

Compensation and Total Rewards

The base salary range for this role is $160,000 to $180,000 CAD plus a target Short-Term Incentive bonus of 25%, 15% target Long-Term Incentive and group benefit coverage.

The hiring range reflects our targeted compensation framework for the role. The actual offer will be determined through a comprehensive evaluation of each candidate’s experience, capabilities, and potential impact, along with consideration of internal equity, team structure, and benchmark market data for similar positions.

In addition to base salary, Kinross offers a comprehensive total rewards package designed to support employee well-being, performance, and long-term development.
