CBC News stations across Ontario are looking for an experienced copy editor to work with local news teams across the province.
In this position, you will play an integral role in elevating the quality of journalism published on all of CBC Ontario's digital and social platforms. You will be an editorial leader with keen news judgment, high standards and an uncompromising attention to detail. You will be comfortable making decisions in accordance with the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, and you are familiar with the legal issues that can arise in news coverage. You know the importance of a great headline and how to craft a story that best serves the audience.
You are passionate about news and thrive on working with others. You are technically savvy and have mastered the art of connecting with colleagues using virtual methods.
As an experienced mentor, you are a thoughtful coach and collaborative team player, someone who deeply enjoys helping journalists develop their writing skills and produce content of the highest quality.
As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You will understand the diverse and changing population throughout Ontario and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.
Note: This full-time position generally will be assigned to a schedule that includes afternoons/evenings and weekends, either over five regular shifts or four compressed shifts. The position requires full-time, on-site presence. The successful candidate can be based at any of the CBC stations within Ontario (Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Ottawa, Peel, Thunder Bay, Toronto, St. Catharines, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Windsor).

Your responsibilities:
Copy edit breaking, enterprise and feature news content, as well as multimedia projects, newsletters, social media copy, video titles and photo descriptions.
Collaboratively work with reporters and producers from across the province to ensure content meets high editorial standards including identifying and fixing issues related to accuracy, structure, story flow and context, as well as maintaining consistency in style.
Write compelling headlines that drive audience interest and engagement.
Quickly write breaking news, participate in live story coverage and curate website lineups as needed.
Build and package digital stories with multimedia content
Monitor news developments to maintain content on CBC Ontario’s websites that reflects the latest news and varied content of interest to our audiences.
Provide coaching and feedback to help journalists and freelancers develop their skills.
Assist in communicating digital news best practices.
Mentor young journalists in story structure and headline writing.
Consume and monitor news from across the province.
Your profile
Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced, daily multi-platform news environment.
Strong journalistic and critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
Ability to manage and organize large volumes of fast-moving information
Substantial experience in copy editing content for digital and social platforms, including fact-checking, legal vetting and packaging.
Advanced knowledge of web, mobile and social media tools and industry and audience trends.
Deep knowledge of Canadian Press style. Knowledge of CBCNews.ca style is an asset.
Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
A high-energy leader with a positive, team-first attitude and the demonstrated ability to motivate and coach teams, and encourage creativity.
A general understanding of the province and CBC’s connection to the communities we serve throughout Ontario.
A keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Ability and willingness to work a schedule that includes Saturday and Sunday.
Possession of a full valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of five years of journalism experience.
