Job descriptionRole Overview PeopleFun is seeking an experienced Principal Game Server Engineer to join the team behind our flagship title, Wordscapes! You will have complete ownership of the Wordscapes server tech stack as the subject matter expert, architecting new, complex game services that scale to millions of users around the world. You will drive technical architecture, process, technology, and execution in code and infrastructure. You’ll collaborate with designers, artists, producers, QA, product, and other engineers to bring fun to the Wordscapes player base.
Key Responsibilities
Architect and implement core gameplay systems for Wordscapes that scale to millions of players worldwide.
Architect and implement social and competitive multiplayer systems including team play, leagues, and player profiles.
Leverage AI tools and techniques to accelerate development, and champion AI‑assisted workflows across the engineering team.
Own and maintain the Wordscapes server infrastructure with a DevOps mindset.
Identify gaps in our systems/processes and effectively prioritize work to address those gaps.
Architect and implement internal tools and services used for customer support, moderation and liveops.
Work effectively as part of a multi‑disciplinary team of engineers, designers, artists, producers, product managers, and QA.
Participate in on‑call rotations and lead incident response for live service issues.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
8+ years of professional experience in server development, delivering backend services that have scaled to millions of users.
Experience leveraging AI‑assisted development tools and workflows.
Extensive knowledge of cloud technologies (GCP, Azure, and/or AWS).
Extensive knowledge of distributed systems, databases, and caching.
Extensive working experience in DevOps practices and philosophies.
Experience building social, cooperative, or competitive multiplayer systems at scale.
Demonstrated ability to drive technical strategy, mentor peers, and champion best practices across an engineering team.
Basic working knowledge of Unity, Unreal or other game engines.
Alignment with PeopleFun’s values, working collaboratively and checking ego at the door.
Experience working on cross‑functional teams with strong verbal and written communication.

Expected base pay range for this Canada based position is $125,000 to $175,000.
