Job description

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects, specializing in the high-rise residential construction sector with clients across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and beyond.

The successful candidate will own each project from contract award through final close-out, coordinating between estimating, drafting, fabrication, shipping, and field erection while interfacing daily with general contractors, consulting engineers of record (EORs), architects, Chief Building Officials/inspectors, and site personnel. This role requires strong technical command of structural steel and miscellaneous metals scope, disciplined contract and change management, fluency in the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and applicable CSA standards, and the ability to keep shop drawings, mill orders, and erection sequences moving in lockstep with the site schedule.

Compensation: $110,000-130,000

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery

  • Manage end-to-end delivery: award, detailing, fabrication, coating, shipping, erection, and close-out.
  • Track schedules, fabrication progress, erection sequencing, costs, and scope changes; manage mill orders and load releases.
  • Issue and maintain fabrication and erection schedules aligned with the GC’s critical path and crane availability.
  • Prepare and maintain project execution plans, erection sequence plans, progress reports, and cost-to-complete forecasts for internal leadership and client review.
  • Respond to site conditions: RFIs, field-fit issues, missing/damaged pieces, back-charges, and retrofit work.
  • Coordinate between internal teams (estimating, detailing, fabrication shop, logistics) and external parties (GC, EOR, architect, connection engineer, inspection agencies).

Contract & Change Management

  • Administer CCDC 2, CCDC 17, CCA-1, and custom GC subcontracts, including scope, bonding, WSIB, and insurance requirements.
  • Reference contract documents and specifications (CSI MasterFormat Divisions 05 12 00 and 05 50 00) throughout the project lifecycle to guide scope interpretation.
  • Identify and process change orders, extras, and variations promptly; coordinate billings, statutory holdback, and lien discharge under the Construction Act (Ontario).
  • Issue timely written notice for schedule and scope impacts; maintain an auditable record of all correspondence to protect the company’s contractual position.
  • Ensure compliance with OBC, CSA S16, CSA W47.1/W59, CWB certification, and applicable coating specifications throughout delivery.

Drawing Management

  • Manage submission and approval of shop, erection, and fabrication drawings (Tekla Structures / AutoCAD); maintain submittal, RFI, and transmittal logs.
  • Prioritize release-for-fabrication (RFF) dates for pieces on the erection critical path and long-lead mill material.
  • QA/QC shop drawings for connection details, bolt grades (ASTM F3125 A325/A490), weld symbols (CSA W59), cambers, MTRs (CSA G40.20/G40.21), and finish requirements.
  • Coordinate trade interfaces (architectural, mechanical, electrical, precast, curtain wall, elevator) to prevent clashes around embeds, penetrations, and miscellaneous attachments.
  • Oversee delegated connection design — coordinating reactions, moment/bracing forces, and P.Eng.-stamped calculations between detailer, connection engineer, and EOR.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Civil/Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Architectural Engineering Technology, or a related discipline
  • Eng. licensure with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or C.E.T./C.Tech. designation
  • PMP (Project Management Institute) or Gold Seal Certification (Canadian Construction Association) is considered an asset.

Experience

  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of project management experience in construction management and/or structural steel fabrication and erection or similar
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering steel packages through the full lifecycle
  • Hands-on experience managing Tekla, SDS/2, or equivalent shop drawings
  • Working knowledge of Canadian standard contract forms, flow-down terms from GC prime contracts, and change/claim processes under the Construction Act (Ontario).
  • Familiarity with miscellaneous metals scope

Technical Knowledge

  • Ontario Building Code (OBC), O. Reg. 332/12, including Part 4 (Structural Design) and its referenced standards.
  • Structural steel standards: CSA S16 (Design of Steel Structures), CSA G40.20/G40.21 (General requirements for rolled or welded structural quality steel), and the CISC Code of Standard Practice for Structural Steel.
  • Welding: CSA W47.1 (Certification of Companies for Fusion Welding of Steel) and CSA W59 (Welded Steel Construction), including WPS review, filler metal selection, and visual/NDE acceptance criteria.
  • Welding inspection: CSA W178.1 / W178.2 inspector qualifications and the role of the CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) in shop certification and audits.
  • Bolting: high-strength bolting practice (ASTM F3125 Grades A325/A490 or metric equivalents), faying-surface, snug-tight vs. pretensioned joints, and turn-of-nut / tension-control methods per CSA S16.
  • Surface prep and coatings: SSPC/NACE prep standards, shop primer vs. intermediate/finish systems, and hot-dip galvanizing to CSA G164 / ASTM A123/A153/A385.
  • Erection practice: Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and O. Reg. 213/91 (Construction Projects), pre-erection planning, crane and rigging fundamentals, and fall-protection requirements including mandatory Working at Heights training.
  • Miscellaneous metals interfaces: OBC-compliant stair and guard geometry (OBC Section 3.4), barrier-free / accessibility requirements under the OBC and AODA, and ladder and platform standards.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong command of project scheduling, cost tracking, and scope control
  • Ability to read, interpret, and QA/QC structural, architectural, and miscellaneous metals drawings
  • Proficiency with MS Project, Procore or Autodesk Construction Cloud, Bluebeam Revu, and MS Office Suite; familiarity with Tekla PowerFab, FabSuite, or equivalent shop systems is an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized, with strong attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Sound commercial judgment and the ability to balance schedule, cost, quality, and contractual risk in a high-tempo fabrication/erection environment.

Working Conditions

  • Based in Brampton, Ontario, with time spent between the plant, and active construction sites across the GTA and surrounding regions; site visits and erection walk as required by project phase.
  • Occasional travel to client offices, supplier mills, galvanizing/paint facilities, and project sites, primarily within Ontario.
  • Must comply with all site-specific health and safety requirements under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and O. Reg. 213/91, including CSA-approved PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, CSA Grade 1 steel-toe boots, high-visibility vest, and fall protection as applicable).
  • Valid Working at Heights certification (CPO-approved) required prior to site attendance; WHMIS 2015 and Ministry of Labour Supervisor Awareness training required.
  • Comfort walking steel erection sites at height, in active crane zones, and through fabrication shops with overhead lifting and welding operations.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence and reliable transportation required for site travel.

Benefits

  • Performance-based annual bonus tied to project profitability and on-time delivery.
  • Comprehensive extended health, dental, and vision benefits and time off policy
  • Mileage reimbursement for site travel, as applicable.

Equal Opportunity & Accommodation

We are an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace. In accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) and the Ontario Human Rights Code, accommodations are available on request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
