COMPANY OVERVIEW The Globe and Mail is a national icon and one of Canada's most recognized media brands. We proudly serve as a trusted destination for Canadians seeking the highest caliber of journalism, and we've garnered international acclaim for our data visualization, design, and creative storytelling.

We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity by reflecting all Canadians in both the stories that we tell and the composition of our workforce. We are proud partners with organizations like Indigenous Works, Pride at Work, the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion, and we are a signatory of the BlackNorth Initiative. Recognizing the importance of work-life balance, we offer flexible work arrangements and support programs.

We also invest in our employees' growth through training and mentorship opportunities, enabling you to expand your skills and embrace new challenges.

No matter your position at The Globe, you'll be an integral part of an organization dedicated to making a positive difference in Canada.

POSITION OVERVIEW The Globe and Mail is seeking an enterprising journalist as our next Ottawa bureau chief.

This is a leadership role for a seasoned reporter with a proven ability to break news, deliver high-impact exclusives, and set the political agenda. The successful candidate will combine sharp instincts with an endless drive to get scoops and hold those in power to account.

Reporting to the editor‑in‑chief and working with the politics editor, the bureau chief will strategize coverage in Ottawa and collaborate with beats across the newsroom on how best to tell those stories. In all of your work, you will be motivated by a central question: Is the government working for Canadians?

RESPONSIBILITIES

Frequently deliver breaking news and exclusive stories

Drive authoritative coverage from the bureau that shapes the national conversation

Manage and mentor a team of reporters

Collaborate with reporters and editors across the newsroom

Represent the bureau publicly at events and appearances

QUALIFICATIONS

At least 10 years working in daily news media

Strong news judgment, with endless curiosity about what’s happening around you

Proven track record of enterprise journalism, specifically politics coverage

Ability to work some evening and weekend hours

This is a management position based in our Ottawa bureau and requires at least three days a week in office.

APPLICATION Please submit a cover letter with your resume.

SALARY The base salary for this role ranges from $117,000 to $146,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate’s level of experience, technical skills, and alignment with the role’s requirements. Candidates who have been identified as meeting the role’s requirements can expect to be near the midpoint of this range, while the upper end is reserved for those with specialized expertise or a strong track record of success in comparable roles. This role may also be eligible for The Globe’s Annual Incentive Plan, which is based on a combination of company and individual performance.
