The MiWay Learning Centre is looking for detail-oriented and process driven individuals to join our team. Training Officers focus on safety, with an eye to efficiency to be compassionate Instructors who make the classroom environment inviting for everyone. This recruitment includes a combination of permanent positions and contract positions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Training Operations, the successful candidate will:

  • Deliver all in-house Transit employee training programs to new and existing Transit Operators that focuses on the development of transit skills and technical knowledge;
  • Set learning objectives, performance standards and expectations for all Transit employees regarding vehicle operation and soft skills required to assist the public;
  • Coach new and existing Transit Operators within a classroom environment, on-road evaluations and one-on-one performance feedback sessions;
  • Deliver Refresher, Return to Work and Remedial training programs, and recommend re-training where necessary;
  • Ensure compliance with all Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Regulations and maintain the Signing Authority Standard required for all Training Officers;
  • Ensure all documentation related to employee training and driving records is maintained and accessible, in accordance with the requirements of the MTO, CIty of Mississauga Corporate policies and MiWay's standard procedural rules and regulations;
  • Conduct collision reviews as part of the Collision Review Committee to determine preventability of collisions and to recommend corrective actions and appropriate training;
  • Act as a subject matter expert for all Transit employees with their questions, concerns and issues related to driving practices, driver performance / behaviour and legislative driving requirements;
  • Investigate customer complaints regarding operator driving behaviour, and provide counsel and training as necessary;
  • Represent the City in matters of public transit liability at claims hearings and other legal proceedings against the City, working closely with the internal Risk Management Section, external Legal Counsel, external Law Firms, Insurance companies and adjusters and other internal departments throughout the City.
  • Assist with the development of required course curriculum and materials;
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the MTO policies and processes, ATU Collective Agreement and MiWay operating polices, practices and procedures;
  • Support MiWay in special events and ad hoc training projects as required;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

NOTE: This position will require rotating shifts including evenings, early mornings and occasionally weekends and holidays in accordance with established service levels.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of grade 12 education (Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent).
  • Valid Ontario Class C or B licence with Z endorsement for a minimum of 3 years;
  • Clean driving record indicating safe and responsible vehicle operation over the past 3 years;
  • Experience as a Peer Trainer is considered an asset;
  • Post-Secondary Degree and/or Certification(s) in Adult Education, Training & Development is preferred;
  • Solid working knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite software, along with all applicable City programs;
  • Must have the ability to obtain Signing Authority status from the MTO;
  • Understanding of transit operations, systems, and service delivery standards is an asset;
  • Knowledge of relevant education programs, MTO and labour legislation (Ontario Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.) is an asset;
  • Proven presentation and facilitation skills, along with customer service skills to be able to create and maintain a leaner-centered environment;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to transfer knowledge in formal and informal settings;
  • Effective organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Consistently bases decisions on a systematic review of relevant facts and information, avoids making assumptions or rushing to judgement and provides clear rationale for decisions;
  • Ablity to build rapport with others within both a union and non-union environment.

Physical Demands of the Job

The successful applicant must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the job including, but not limited to:

  • Sitting up to 60 minute intervals in office environment, on or driving a bus/other vehicles;
  • Standing up to 45 minute intervals in office environment and while delivering training;
  • Sensory requirements include hearing, speaking, vision (near, distance, depth and colour) and smelling;
  • Working indoors and outdoors in office environment, garage and campus, on bus and various transit locations with exposure to inclement weather;
  • Working on carpet, vinyl and rubberized flooring, concrete, pavement, asphalt and grass with exposure to slippery surfaces;
  • Exposure to noise from buses, horns, exhaust fans in parking garage, maintenance repairs from tools, traffic noise and conversations (hearing protection not required);
  • Exposure to chemical/biological (leaks and spills from vehicles), mechanical (air brake training system, wheelchair ramp, bus doors), hot/cold (outdoor conditions) and vapour/fumes (garage and stations) hazards;
  • Frequent walking up to 15 minute intervals ranging from 100-500m;
  • Climbing on/off a bus/other vehicles, accessing buildings and using step stools up to 10 times/shift;
  • Foot action up to 30 minute intervals using bus/other vehicle pedals, requiring force up to 20.5 kg;
  • Balancing up to 45 minute intervals standing on a bus in motion with limited ability to hold structure for support;
  • Occasional bending and twisting of the back up to 20 times/hour
  • Exposure to fluorescent lighting, interior lighting and natural light
  • Operating 40 and 60 foot buses as well as other company vehicles

Cognitive Demands of the Job

The successful applicant must have the ability to meet the cognitive demands of the job including, but not limited to:

  • Provides work direction, face-to-face instruction and evaluates work performance with the exclusion of disciplinary action;
  • Errors in judgement or attention could have grave or life-threatening consequences (injury or death), financial implications (property damage), legal implications (lawsuits), and compromised company reputation;
  • Frequent exposure (2-3 times/week in-person) to emotionally stressful circumstances or emotionally distressed individuals and rare to occasional exposure (once/month) to confrontational situations where help is readily available;
  • Frequently required to solve routine problems/make decisions; occasional non-routine problem solving;
  • Constantly required to work with safety issues and/or equipment and course of action impacts safety of self or others;
  • Interaction with sensitive data that requires attention to confidentiality and privacy;
  • Frequently required to work in co-operation with others;
  • High memory ability to recall many pieces of information and/or sequences which may be recalled in demanding situations i.e. deadlines pressures or being out of context;
  • Time pressure is moderate; most job tasks have pressure to meet deadlines or work within time constraints;
  • Highly developed English communication skills are required to comprehend and communicate complex information or communicate in complex situations (technical or professional concepts);
  • Frequently required to use many computer programs at a competent level i.e. Microsoft Office, Google, Chrome, WebEx, Hastus, AIR, ARIS, DCP, Transit Master;
  • A high degree of reading literacy is required to read reports, manuals, or other documents with a high degree of comprehension; document length may be long; printed and digital formats; frequent reading of numbers; comprehension is critical for job function;
  • Significant attention to detail or concentration required for many tasks or intense attention to detail or concentration required for some tasks
  • Responsible for concurrent tasks, with some time management skill and judgement required to determine priorities with possible interruptions
  • Moderate degree of distracting stimuli during some tasks or portions of the shift
