Takla Nation POSITION TITLE: Principal, Nus Wadeezulh Community School (Maternity Coverage) WAGE: $55.06 - $74.49 DIRECT REPORT: Director of Education START DATE: ASAP- JUNE 27,2026 SUPERVISOR: Director of Education and Education Councillor ABOUT TAKLA FIRST NATION: The traditional territory of the Takla Nation is located in North Central British Columbia and totals approximately 27,250 square kilometres. The territory is a rich environment of lakes, rivers, forests, and mountains, bordered on the west by the Skeena Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountains. Takla Nation is an amalgamation of the North Takla Band and the Fort Connelly Band, a union which occurred in 1959. Our traditional lands are the geographic area occupied by our ancestors for community, social, economic, and spiritual purposes. Carrier and Sekani place names exist for every physical feature and place that we occupy. Each name reflects the significance of the feature or site, and today, it provides us with historical information about the rich history and extensive knowledge of our land and resources. POSITION OVERVIEW: Guided by Takla Nation's vision, values, and plans, the principal is responsible for providing exceptional educational opportunities through Nus Wadeelzulh School. The principal reports to the Director of Education, Training, and employment and hires, supervises, and evaluates all School-based employees, both instructional and administrative, except for staff who are part of the operations and maintenance Department working with the school. Employee management will follow the Nation's policies and procedures. The principal is responsible for developing and maintaining positive and proactive relationships with students, parents, Advisory Committees, the Chief and Council, Elders and community knowledge holders, and Band colleagues. Engaging parents, Elders, and community leaders in defining appropriate curricula and encouraging home and community-based support for Takla students is critical to the success of this role. With the support of the Director and the engagement of the Councillor responsible for Education, the Principal is responsible for managing all in-school and school-related activities, including field trips, language and cultural education, land and community based education. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Practicing leadership in a manner that is viewed positively within the Nation and by instructional and administrative colleagues, and that builds the support of those with whom he/she works most directly Respecting, honouring, and adhering to all confidentiality requirements, the B.C. Ministry of Education Code of Ethics, the Takla Nation Code of Conduct and the Respectful Workplace Policy. Assisting in setting, then monitoring and achieving the educational and administrative goals as approved by Chief and Council, and monitored by the Director and, the School Advisory, and the Takla Education Advisory Committee Supporting and advocating cultural content inclusion in curriculum and activities, in concert with other departments with related responsibilities. Developing, implementing and monitoring professional development plans for all staff, and, in collaboration with the Director, his or herself. Developing and maintaining positive and effective relations with internal, community, and external colleagues. EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP: Provides supervision and evaluation of classroom teacher performance Provides direction and oversight for curriculum and delivery of curriculum to the established standards Ensures the School meets all the requirements of the B.C. Ministry of Education curriculum and standards Ensures all necessary assessment and learning materials are planned for, and available for teachers and students Monitors the change process for individual students and the school, using objective data collection instruments and techniques. Provide all required reports and analysis of information to the Director, Advisory Groups and Chief and Council Develops feedback instruments and conducts teacher supervision and evaluation with respect to targeted teaching strategies and submitted units of instruction. Ensures that plans within assigned key areas contribute towards initiatives established by the Board and the Director and are evaluated. Ensures that staff members have the opportunity to collaborate with other professionals and attend in-service in order to improve their teaching performance. STUDENT WELL – BEING: Ensures that the school environment fosters and maintains respectful and responsible behaviors. Ensures the safety of students while participating in school programs. Acts as the local attendance officer for the schools within the assigned area. Regularly and proactively engages individual parents, and the School Advisory Committee to provide information and receive feedback on student engagement, development, and well-being. COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS: Takes appropriate actions to ensure open, transparent, positive communications are developed and maintained within the school and the community. Ensures that parents are highly satisfied with the services provided and the responsiveness of the in-school administration and the Director of Education. Represents the Director at school events within the assigned area. Ensures that the school is represented positively in public forums around the area. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITY: Prepares an annual budget as required by the Nation. Review, approve, and regularly monitor school-based plans regarding the expenditure of funds related to school-based initiatives and budgets. Ensures that financial resources are expended in accordance with the annual budget approved by Chief and Council, except in the case of an emergency as provided for in the Nation's financial policies. Follows the Nation's procurement and expenditure authority policies to minimize school expenses and to obtain comparative prices and quality. Provides appropriate financial information and accountability reports related to the functioning of school personnel and programs within the assigned area. In collaboration with the Director, and in alignment with the Nation's policy system, plans, develops, communicates, implements and evaluates school policies and procedures. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Comprehensive understanding of educational theory and practice Demonstrated competency in oral and written communication skills, Ability to effectively interact and relate to children in a developmentally appropriate manner, Ability to pass a criminal background check of vulnerable people, Excellent interpersonal skills, Knowledge of sign language is an asset, Genuinely committed to helping children learn, Cultural sensitivity, Excellent problem-solving skills, Ability and willingness to perform required physical tasks, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in education required; master's degree in education preferred. Member of Teacher Regulation Branch (or working towards membership) Qualified to teach in Canada 3 to 5 years of experience as a Teacher is preferred. 3 to 5 years staff supervision experience preferred. Proven ability to successfully work and interact with children, youth, parents/guardians, staff and visitors in a sensitive, effective and professional manner. Good organizational, time management and prioritization skills. Strong morals and ethics, sound judgement and reasoning skills, and a commitment to discretion and privacy. Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills that allow one to work Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
