Job description

At Stantec, we know the work we do matters. From decarbonizing mines to modernizing electric grids and building the infrastructure that fuels communities, we’re powering the world. Our clients come to us with their biggest, most complex challenges because that’s where we thrive. And we’re looking for problem solvers, high achievers, and visionaries to help us.

Join us for a chance to grow professionally at one of the world’s top design firms while building our clean energy future.

Your Opportunity:

We are currently seeking a Senior Project Manager to join our design team

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects while leading project teams, managing resources, and ensuring projects meet time, budget, and quality objectives.

  • Manage multiple energy sectors (Power Delivery, Heavy Industrial Process, Oil & Gas, etc.) projects, overseeing the entire project lifecycle, from initiation to completion. Managing the approved scope, schedule and budget.

  • Business Development support by communicating effectively with clients to identify needs, evaluating alternative solutions, and delivering value added services.

  • Coordinate with business development leaders and resource managers to write proposals (scoping, scheduling, resourcing, and pricing)

  • Understand project business structure, risks, and our business drivers.

  • Define project objectives, establish timelines, and develop detailed Project Management Plans to guide planning and execution and ensure alignment with organizational goals.

  • Assemble and lead cross-functional teams, delegate tasks, facilitate communication, and maintain team motivation and collaboration, ensuring effective communication and collaboration among team members from different disciplines, offices, business lines, and work groups. Motivate teams, resolve conflicts, and maintain a positive working environment.

  • Communicate regularly with the client and project team. Serve as the central point of contact between stakeholders, leadership, and team members, providing regular updates and progress reports. Ensure that parties are aligned on project goals, expectations, and changes throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Provide day-to-day project oversight and communication with the client and project team. Prepare and distribute meeting notes to the project team.

  • Develop, track, and update the project budget throughout all phases of the project. Develop cashflow forecasts.

  • Allocate resources efficiently, track project costs, and ensure projects stay within budget. Review and track contracts, invoices, and payments to contractors, consultants, and equipment vendors.

  • Monitor project progress against established milestones and key performance indicators (KPIs). Prepare regular updates and reports to stakeholders to inform about the project's status.

  • Identify potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and implement contingency plans to minimize impact on project timelines and outcomes. Create Risk Register for regular review and monitoring.

  • Ensure that project deliverables meet rigorous quality standards. Implement processes for continuous improvement and feedback. Ensure that project activities comply with relevant laws, regulations, and safety standards.

  • Review change order requests associated with the project. Create and monitor a Change Request Register.

  • Responsible for conducting post-project evaluations, documenting lessons learned, coordinating development of project profiles (for marketing), and ensuring that project deliverables are completed and handed over to stakeholders.

  • Mentor project managers and team members to build a cohesive and capable project team. Support professional development and career growth.

  • Work in alignment with Project Executive to develop business with existing clients and seek out new opportunities in the region. Existing client relationships are desired.

Your Capabilities and Credentials:

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to delivering high‑quality work.

Key capabilities include:

  • Foundational technical understanding of various energy sector projects.

  • Ability to apply engineering judgment at an appropriate level and recognize developing project issues and seeking guidance and support when required.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with Access, Project, or similar tools is considered an asset. Familiarity with project environments (SharePoint, ACC, etc) and how to navigate models in Navisworks will be considered an asset.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to project team members and, with support, to clients and stakeholders.

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and build positive working relationships with colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize work, manage multiple tasks, and follow direction while meeting project schedules, budgets, and quality requirements.

  • Attention to detail, with the ability to review own work for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project objectives.

  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and actively contribute to problem‑solving through critical and creative thinking.

  • Commitment to client service and the delivery of professional, high‑quality engineering work products.

  • Professional, respectful, and positive communication style in both written and in‑person interactions.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering/technical or related discipline.

  • 7+ years of relevant engineering experience, primarily focused on project management, including responsibility for scope, schedule, budget, and coordination of multidisciplinary teams

  • Registration as a Project Management Professional (PMP) is considered an asset.

  • Experience with alternative project delivery methods (e.g., design‑build, P3, progressive design‑build) is considered an asset.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with strong written and verbal communication abilities to effectively engage with clients, project teams, regulators, and other stakeholders.
