What is the project? The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station Refurbishment Program involves designing and building a new deep‑water intake in Lake Ontario to improve the plant’s cooling system. The project includes a 5‑km‑long tunnel built by a pressurized TBM (10.15 m diameter slurry TBM), two vertical shafts (onshore and offshore), and an offshore modular intake structure resting on the lake bed. It is distinguished by its proximity to an active nuclear site, requiring rigorous safety, planning and coordination standards.
What You Will Do The Chief Surveyor is accountable for overseeing and managing the surveying team in the collection of monitoring data, establishing manual monitoring, and supervising daily survey activities.
Concretely, Your Tasks Will Be
Management of the in‑tunnel, LU/LO and surface monitoring teams;
Accountable for the accurate acquisition of data;
Collection of all monitoring data in time for daily review;
Accountable for the data programming of the tunnel guidance software;
Liaise with JV SCL Engineering team and the client regarding daily monitoring reports and queries;
Develop junior members of staff within the team;
Attend daily SRG (Shift Review Group) meetings if required and feed back to team as necessary;
Manage resources and equipment available to the team for monitoring activities;
Organise additional survey resources when needed to cover additional works instructed by the client;
Demonstrate a personal commitment to safety;
Participate in continuous improvement;
Ensure environmental compliance;
Contribution to the sustainability agenda.
Your Skills
Degree in geomatics, civil engineering, surveying, or a related field;
10 years of experience in construction surveying, ideally with tunnel or underground projects;
Extensive knowledge of SCL tunnel monitoring, construction & surveying, and prior strong experience managing a large team across split locations;
Experience with monitoring systems, geodetic & geotechnical;
Very good knowledge of computer systems and modern survey equipment with data transmission;
Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural project environments;
A proactive, field‑oriented mindset with strong problem‑solving capabilities;
Experience working in nuclear‑regulated environments is an asset.
