Position Description
Reporting to senior leadership within the Building Science Group, the Structural Forensic Engineer will take a lead role in managing and executing projects involving structural investigations, failure analysis, and building envelope performance.
This role combines fieldwork, technical analysis, and project management, with a strong focus on identifying root causes of structural and building system failures.
Projects may include water intrusion or deterioration, structural deficiencies, damage caused by environmental events like wind or fire, etc. Projects will range in size and complexity, but will include complex high-profile investigations.
- Lead structural and building envelope investigations at job sites
- Identify root causes of structural deficiencies and building failures
- Conduct site assessments, testing, and sample collection
- Prepare detailed engineering reports and technical recommendations
- Develop repair strategies, including stamped drawings where required
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables
- Coordinate and oversee Engineers-in-Training (EITs) and technologists
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and stakeholders
- Participate in site meetings, walkthroughs, and project planning
- Support business development and client relationship management
- Ensure compliance with building codes, standards, and regulations
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Structural, or Building Science)
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario (PEO)
- Minimum 2–3 years of post-licensure experience
- Experience in structural investigations or building science
- Working with a consulting firm a strong asset
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of building systems and construction methods
- Experience with structural assessments and failure analysis
- Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and site data
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and Google Docs
- Familiarity with structural design software
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Structural, or Building Science)
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario (PEO)
