What is the Opportunity?
CanAtom, a joint venture between AtkinsRéalis and Aecon, is delivering the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station Refurbishment Project under a collaborative contract with Ontario Power Generation. The joint venture is underway to complete the retube, feeder, and boiler replacement (RFBR) of Units 5–8, building on the successful delivery of the Darlington Refurbishment Project.
Reporting Structure
The Environmental Lead reports to the Director, EHS, of OPG Refurbishment Projects and is responsible for oversight of project execution and environmental performance.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Develop, monitor, and deliver all plans and processes for environmental management and waste management.
- Oversee and maintain the RFBR/TGR Environmental Management System.
- Define environmental programs for the projects.
- Support implementation of the programs.
- Assess environmental program implementation and performance and report on the same.
- Prepare summary information for the management review of the EMS.
- Prepare and maintain the Project EMP’s and WMP’s and associated standards and procedures consistent with the client’s EMS program.
- Identify and maintain the Environmental Aspects and Significant Environmental Aspects list, as well as objectives, performance measures, and targets for the project.
- Prepare documentation and reports.
- Evaluate the Environmental Operational Plans or equivalent submitted to the team, where applicable.
- Participate in the preparation of corrective action plans, as necessary.
- Perform field inspections, surveys and walkdowns of environment‑related activities to assure field activities, conditions and results are per requirement.
- Provide information as necessary in support of environmental awareness and contractor environmental training activities.
- Provide guidance and coach/mentor staff in the execution of environment‑related field activities.
- As necessary, prepare draft formal regulatory communications on behalf of the company for review, processing, and issue by client.
- Advise or provide technical guidance to project managers and supervisors of potential environmental risks associated with specific field activities.
- Provide oversight of chemical management and approvals in line with OPG requirements.
- Secure and maintain all appropriate licenses, permits and approvals of an environmental nature required for the company’s operations as needed.
- Act as Hazardous Waste Information Network (HWIN) administrator / oversight for hazardous waste movements as needed.
- Interface with the client Environment Section staff to discuss project environmental performance, OPEX, events and issues of mutual interest/concern.
- Participate in environmental audits, assessments and inspections conducted by others.
- Identify legal and other requirements applicable to the projects and maintain a list of those requirements.
- Identify and monitor new environmental legal requirements and amendments to existing requirements coming into effect and interpret as to applicability to the projects.
- Prepare documentation to facilitate compliance to legal and other requirements; obtain/provide interpretation of requirements, as necessary.
- Share best practices, lessons learned, operating experience and innovations to encourage continual improvement. Ensure deployment of internal environmental audit program.
- Work with EHS Advisors to develop their understanding and awareness of environmental issues when in the field.
- Communicate with outside agencies/regulators as required.
- Review contracts, Contractor Environment Plans, work plans, etc. to provide assurance that legal and other requirements have been taken into account.
- Develop proposed objectives, performance measures and targets.
- Communicate specified project performance information to client environment staff for use in deriving overall performance.
- Prepare information and participate in the client’s Environmental Management Review.
What You Bring to the Team:
- Must possess, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and/or environmental management from a reputable university.
- Must have at least 5 years of experience working in environmental management.
- Must have demonstrable experience developing and managing environmental management programs in accordance with ISO requirements.
- Will work at multiple locations in both field and office; able to work at heights.
- Will use respirator and plastic RPPE.
- Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Teams, SiteDocs, Cority.
- A team player that is adaptable and flexible to an ever‑changing environment.
- Background in training and/or education and/or experience delivering programs to individuals and groups is an asset.
- Be a champion of inclusion and diversity.
- OPG Security Clearance would be considered an asset.
- Ability to conduct field work including walking 3 km+ per day, climb multiple flights of stairs, and occasionally climb ladders.
- Flexibility to support project demands, including shift work, extended hours, and occasional weekend or night work throughout the duration of the project.

Pay Range
$70,000 - $115,000 per year, based on work location, education, experience, and other factors.
