Job description

Shape the future of sustainable development across Canada.

ERM is seeking a Managing Consultant, Environmental Assessment Coordinator and Provincial Permitting Specialist to play a pivotal role in advancing complex infrastructure and natural resource projects across Canada. Ideally based in one of our Canadian offices (Vancouver, Smithers, Whitehorse, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, or Sudbury).

In this leadership‑oriented position, you’ll sit at the intersection of regulation, strategy, and impact—guiding clients through some of Canada’s most critical environmental assessment and permitting processes. You’ll collaborate closely with ERM’s Canadian and global experts, influence regulatory outcomes, support Indigenous and stakeholder engagement, and help deliver projects that balance development with environmental and social responsibility.

Why This Role Matters?

Environmental assessments and permitting decisions shape the pace, integrity, and long‑term success of resource and infrastructure development. In this role, your expertise helps ensure projects are designed and delivered responsibly, regulators are engaged effectively, and communities’ voices are respected—all while enabling clients to move forward with confidence.

What Your Impact Is:

  • Provide trusted, strategic regulatory guidance that influences project outcomes.

  • Lead and coordinate environmental assessment and permitting efforts across jurisdictions.

  • Strengthen relationships with regulators, Indigenous communities, clients, and stakeholders.

  • Mentor and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams within ERM Canada and globally.

  • Support sustainable, compliant development in sectors critical to Canada’s future.

What You’ll Bring:

A combination of technical depth, regulatory insight, and leadership presence. You’re comfortable navigating complexity, building trust across diverse stakeholder groups, and translating regulatory requirements into clear, actionable strategies for clients and teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic input and advice on regulatory requirements and approval pathways for client projects.

  • Consult with regulators and clients, building and maintaining strong, professional relationships.

  • Support and contribute to engagement programs with Indigenous communities, the public, and other stakeholders.

  • Liaise with broader client teams, including engineering, engagement, and other consulting firms.

  • Support project managers with scope, budget, schedule, and quality control to meet client and regulatory expectations.

  • Coordinate and directly contribute to client deliverables, including:

    Due diligence studies

    Technical reports and studies

    Regulatory research and reviews

    Plain‑language communications and engagement materials

Environmental assessment and permitting applications across all regulatory phases

    Comment tracking and response coordination

  • Coordinate with internal and external subject‑matter experts.

  • Delegate work to ERM’s mapping, publishing, and data analysis teams.

  • Support business development and marketing through client research, proposal development, and preparation of marketing materials.

  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with ERM colleagues worldwide.

  • Apply critical and strategic thinking to influence team performance and deliver positive client outcomes.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, biology, environmental engineering, or a related field.

  • 4+ years of experience in the resource development industry or consulting.

  • Applied experience in British Columbia, Ontario, and/or Yukon.

  • Proven expertise in Canadian federal, provincial, and territorial environmental assessment processes, regulations, and guidelines.

  • Experience with infrastructure or natural resource development projects in sectors such as: Renewable energy, Mining, Transportation, Oil and Gas.

  • Strong understanding of environmental and social effects associated with major development projects.

  • Understanding of engagement requirements tied to federal and provincial regulatory processes.

  • Excellent writing, communication, organizational, time management, and attention‑to‑detail skills.

  • Ability to prepare both technical and plain‑language deliverables.

  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced consulting environment.

  • Strong commitment to safety, including adherence to established health and safety protocols.

  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.

  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred:

  • 7+ years of experience in the resource development industry or consulting.

  • Eligible to obtain a professional designation (e.g. RPBio).

  • Fluency in additional languages (e.g., Indigenous languages, French).

  • Experience working with Indigenous groups, particularly within federal and provincial regulatory frameworks.

  • Experience using AI‑enabled tools to improve efficiency and reduce project risk.

  • Familiarity with field program scoping to meet regulatory requirements.

  • Experience with environmental compliance monitoring, notifications, and permitting support during operational phases.

  • Experience or exposure to community and stakeholder engagement.

  • Demonstrated growth mindset with a strong interest in continuous learning and skill development.
