Duties and Responsibilities
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) on the Acute Medicine (G5) unit is responsible for using the nursing process to provide patient care according to the standards and current scope of practice as set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the policies of Lakeridge Health Corporation. The RPN participates as a member of the Health Care Team by conducting assessments, monitoring patients' medical status, supporting other team members in decision‑making, ensuring accuracy in clinical documentation of patient care needs, and participating in quality improvement initiatives relevant to the unit and organization as required. Nurses also teach, delegate, assign and supervise Personal Support Workers in delivery of patient care, maintain competence and professionalism relevant to current practice, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Registered Practical Nurse Diploma from an accredited community college
- Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (in good standing)
- Demonstrated commitment to maintain Reflective Practice Standards as outlined by the CNO
- Current B.C.L.S.
- Current Medication Certificate with the ability to administer medications to patients
- Proven related experience in Acute Medicine and/or similar environment
- CNA certification in geriatrics is an asset
- Updated nursing skills including Aseptic Techniques and Patient Assessment courses
- Effective organizational, interpersonal, problem‑solving, prioritization, time‑management, and teaching skills
- Ability to work with unregulated health care providers as per the standards set out by the CNO standards and the LH policies and procedures
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster good public relations and effective working relationships in a family centred environment
- Demonstrated ability to perform appropriately in emergency situations
- Proven ability to assume a leadership/preceptorship role
- Physical ability to lift, turn and transfer patients manually and with the assistance of mechanical aids
- Must have a satisfactory performance record
