JOB DESCRIPTION

DANCE TEACHER

Commencing August 31, 2026, preference will be given to qualified teachers who are a) academically multi-disciplinary b) can offer expertise, experience and enthusiasm in co-curricular activities c) are committed to contributing to our boarding campus and community, and d) have boarding school experience.

Appointment: 1 school year contract position for a mat leave cover, with the possibility of extension.

Teaching Load: 1.0 FTE preferred. Candidates seeking a partial load (minimum 0.75 FTE) will also be considered; please specify your preferred FTE in your cover letter.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting directly to both the Head of Academics & Leadership and the Academic Department Head, the Dace Teacher is responsible for:

• Performing Arts 8, Dance 9, Dance Choreography 10, and Dance Company 11 and 12.
• The Grade 8 course is a broad performing arts class with a holistic focus on music and musical performance.
• In Grades 9 to 12, the teacher will guide students in developing technical dance skills and original choreography across a range of styles, including jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop. These courses emphasize student wellness, self-expression, and the exploration of culture, history, and identity through movement.
• Carry assigned load of classes while meeting all of Shawnigans prep, planning and reporting protocols as expected in the teaching profession;
• Collaborate with fellow department members and across departments to design and deliver content that challenges our students and prepares them for their post-secondary pathways;
• Be available to support students in their learning through tutorials or enrichment opportunities;
• Be involved in the full Shawnigan program and the delivery of The Shawnigan Journey.

REQUIREMENTS

• Legally entitled to work in Canada;
• Hold a post-secondary degree in Education or related discipline that aligns with the Shawnigan academic program;
• Be in possession of, or eligible to apply for, a British Columbia Teaching Certificate (Independent or Certificate of Qualification) before May 2026;
• Ability to adapt to changing enrollments in curricular dance by being certified in other teachable subjects;
• Experience teaching students from grade 8 to 12 in a variety of areas such as ballet, jazz, contemporary dance, hip hop, tap and other areas;
• A proven record of encouraging students and practicing inclusion for all to embrace and find joy within dance;
• Experience teaching specialized dance and introductory dance, and choreographing musicals;
• Experience with research-based and current pedagogy such as inquiry-based learning, universal design for learning and standards-based assessment, an asset;
• Have experience working with teenagers from diverse backgrounds;
• Have experience working in a boarding environment an asset;
• Have strong interpersonal and communication skills;
• Proven record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability.
