Asthma Educator - Child Outpatient Services (Asthma Clinic)

Position Summary
As a member of the interprofessional team, the Asthma Educator (AE) works collaboratively to support the delivery of safe, evidence-informed, and patient-centered care within the Paediatric Regional Asthma Program. Reporting to the Program Manager, the Asthma Educator supports program operations, patient education, clinical assessment, and coordination of care in alignment with the Hospital’s vision, values, and strategic priorities. The Asthma Educator collaborates with patients, families, physicians, healthcare providers, schools, and community partners to promote asthma management, self-management education, and continuity of care across the continuum of care.

Key Responsibilities

• Provides asthma education, assessment, and support to paediatric patients and families using evidence- informed practices and established clinical guidelines.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates individualized education plans to support patient self- management, symptom recognition, medication adherence, and asthma control.
• Performs and maintains competency in spirometry and exercise challenge testing in accordance with professional standards and departmental procedures.
• Collaborates with physicians, specialists, nursing, allied health professionals, schools, and community agencies to support coordinated, patient-centered care.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external partners to support continuity of care across the healthcare continuum.
• Provides education sessions to patients, families, community groups, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders as required.
• Supports effective communication among members of the Asthma Care Team, referring physicians, specialists, patients, families, and community partners.
• Participates in patient care rounds, case discussions, and interprofessional meetings as applicable.
• Utilizes clinical judgment and problem-solving skills to support patient care planning and achieve optimal patient outcomes.
• Supports day-to-day program operations, including resource coordination, workload management, risk management activities, and monitoring of program indicators.
• Maintains accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation and reporting in accordance with organizational and professional standards.
• Communicates operational, clinical, and program-related updates to the Program Manager as required.
• Maintains awareness of current developments, best practices, and emerging evidence related to asthma education and paediatric respiratory care.
• Maintains professional competence through ongoing education, training, workshops, and continuing professional development activities.
• Supports orientation, mentorship, and learning opportunities for students, new team members, and learners within the program.
• Promotes a collaborative, respectful, and supportive work environment that encourages teamwork, professional growth, and continuous learning.
• Participates in quality improvement, program evaluation, accreditation readiness, and evidence-informed practice initiatives.
• Adheres to hospital policies related to confidentiality, infection prevention and control, workplace safety, and professional conduct.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Manager or designate.

Compensation to be determined based on the Regulating College.

Qualifications

Education

• Graduate of an accredited educational program in a health science field, and member in good standing of affiliated college is required.
• Completion of requirements for national certification as a Certified Respiratory Educator with the Canadian Network for Respiratory Care is required and/or Certified Asthma Educator designation is required.
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is required. CPR Level HCP (Health Care Provider) will be accepted as an equivalent.

Experience

• Minimum of three (3) years of related clinical experience in child and family health is required.
• Experience in interdisciplinary team participation employing principles of patient-focused model of care is preferred.
• Proficient in spirometry – both testing and interpretation at an advanced level is required.

Skills and Traits

• Must be able to meet the physical and emotional responsibilities of the role, including standing and walking for extended periods, frequent and repetitive pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as safely operating equipment.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, as outlined in the Physical Demands Analysis (PDA).
• Demonstrates proficiency in written and verbal communication, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
